About me

I am Alison Harris MNCS(Acc) and I offer affordable, professional Counselling and Hypnotherapy in Herne Bay, Canterbury and the surrounding area. The aim of counselling is to support you through your journey, and by working together to overcome your problems, I can help you to regain a sense of control over your own life.

Everybody needs help with something at some stage in their life, so please dont feel that help is not available to you. Some people try to brush off their problems, and say, well in the scheme of things I feel awkward about raising this, when a lot of people are worse off than me. Well, I believe very firmly : "If it matters to you.....then it matters"

Your counselling should be about you, and what it is you need. My job is to guide you, gently, so that you find the necessary understanding and then to empower you to take control of your life again. When you understand where something comes from, it wont have the same power over you and you can be free of it for the future.

You will find my practice under the name AJH Therapy Services. As well as being a self employed Counsellor and Hypnotherapist I also donate my time to a counselling Charity in East Kent, offering counselling support to people referred by their GP or Mental Health Team. To complement these skills I have over 20 years’ experience working with victims of serious crime, and have previously trained to work with people affected by crime and support people bereaved by sudden death.

I am on a voluntary register that has been accredited by the Professional Standards Authority. This accredited register (AVR Scheme) was set up by the Government to improve standards and safety for the public. Important bodies like the NHS now recognise this scheme. Being on the register demonstrates that as a therapist I am committed to high professional standards and service. You can see the AVR quality mark displayed at the end of this profile.

My counselling work is eclectic, which means I use components of different therapy models and integrate them into your sessions as needed. By working in this way I can identify the most effective method to help you as an individual, and choose the tools best suited to your personal needs. Working together in an eclectic way means if a particular tool is not comfortable or effective, we can adapt it to maintain your progress.

More and more people are seeking help for anxiety related conditions. Some don't want to work through the causes they just want the tools to be able to cope with the symptoms and effects, and that's fine. In my practice nobody is made to feel uncomfortable or forced to face issues if they are not ready to. For more information about Anxiety and counselling, follow this link to my website article :

PANIC - one of the most common symptoms relating to anxiety is panic. This can be overwhelming and a panic attack can leave you feeling scared and with no control. I can help you to slowly regain that sense of control, and we can work on techniques to manage the attacks so that yo ucan get on with your life.

Abuse comes in many forms, emotional, psychological and physical to name just three. All of them are damaging and all of them destroy self esteem and confidence. Abuse is often about control, but its never your fault  - the responsibility lies with the person who is carrying it out. Even admitting that someone we love or who ought to love us is hurting us is incredibly hard - and brings powerful feeling of guilt and shame. I always strive to treat clients sensitively and with respect - and nobody is ever made to face something they are not ready to. Its your story, at your pace. If you are reading this, but feel anxious or scared or simply not ready, then maybe start by confiding in a friend, or if you feel isolated what about a support group?

If you feel more comfortable, Use the contact sheet to email me your questions about this type of work.

Many people suffer with low self esteem or poor self worth and its probably more common than you think. Often it keeps us locked into a negative cycle we just cant seem to break out of. Some of us are very good at presenting a persona to the outside world, but inside are struggling to cope. Counselling can help you understand where those issues come from and why. Understanding yourself is the key to making changes. Do you find that in life the same pattern keeps on repeating itself? Whether its about work, or relationships or family, you keep making choices that are not right for you. You can change the pattern, you just need to know why its there. I can help you achieve those changes.

"Alison was insightful but not at all judgemental. Thank you for everything"  Mrs R, Herne Bay

"I really feel like I've turned a corner. Thank you" Mrs F, Faversham

"I feel like I've connected my younger self to my current self, and now I feel like I can conquer anything" - Mrs S, Whitstable

" I simply want to say thank you. You know what the past weeks have meant to me" Miss L, Herne Bay

"Just wanted to say a massive thank you again for your help. I came away today feeling so much better, and for some reason can’t stop smiling! Long may it last" Ms J Whitstable

Some of the ways I work may sound familiar to you, especially if you have tried counselling before or have been doing some research; the tools we could use include person-centred counselling, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) tools, Mindfulness, Rational Emotional Behaviour Therapy (REBT) tools, psychoanalytical tools, perhaps even some hypno-counselling if you are comfortable with that. My experience is that integrating therapy styles works best for most clients, because no two people are exactly the same, and we all have different experiences and different levels of coping. We are all different, so I aim to respect that and work accordingly.
