About me

Therapy is a very personal, private and individual experience - we come to therapy when something in our lives isn't working.

My approach is warm and empathic and I hope by creating a safe environment through establishing clear boundaries and developing trust, a meaningful connection evolves at a pace that you are comfortable with.

Training, qualifications & experience

I have always been interested in what makes us do what we do and I was fortunate enough to find my calling whilst studying counselling in college.

In 2010 I completed the UUJ HE Diploma in Counselling gaining a distinction. I have also gained a Foundation Certificate in Gestalt theory at NRC and a Post Graduate Certificate in Systemic Practice and Family Therapy from Queen's University Belfast, as well as, the CPCAB Level 5 Diploma in CBT. I have also completed training with Sleep Scotland and am an Accredited Sleep Counsellor as well as numerous courses in respect of child development. I completed the CPCAB Level 6 in Supervision and am an Accredited and Registered member of BACP.

I have also attended many short courses and workshops (as per BACP ethical guidelines of 30 hours per year). My CPD is an ongoing part of both personal and professional development with specific areas of interest being neurodiversity.

I have been fortunate to work in a variety of settings which have developed my abilities as a growing therapist. From working intensely in the Autism community within two of Northern Ireland's Autism charities - both Autism NI and Autism Initiatives with children, young people and adults. I have had a variety of roles and have gained experience and qualifications in early intervention and group work with children, teens and adults. I have also been involved in delivering training, such as Understanding Autism, Growing Up and Autism, Autism and Employment. Working with neurodiversity remains a special interest.

I currently work in private practice, within the schools setting, as well as, the Self Harm Intervention Programme and Bright Future, primarily with young people and adults who are in crisis.   As such, I have experience working with a wide range of mental health difficulties.

My supervisors have taught me a variety of valuable interventions which I use in my daily work. I firmly believe in continuing to challenge myself as a therapist.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

Other areas of counselling I deal with

I have completed significant training and ongoing cpd around autism and adhd and have worked with children, young people and adults. I also have specific training in early intervention.

Due to my work within the Self Harm Intervention Project, I also have experience working with young people and adults in crisis, in particular self harm.

As part of my ongoing development, I completed 80 hour cpd on OnLine & Telephone Counselling with the Counselling Tutor.
