Solution focused personal counselling in Manchester and Cheshire
What do I mean by solution focused counselling?
I concentrate on what clients want to achieve, or to change in their lives through therapy. My approach does not focus on the problems of the past, or their causes (but does not ignore them either); it focuses on the present and the future. I work to help my clients construct a preferred future, and then assess realistic, achievable ways of working towards that future.
I am often asked about CBT — Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. This is now probably the most widely used approach in counselling. Yes, on occasions I do integrate CBT into my work, and find it to be extremely effective. However, as with the whole range of approaches I employ, I am solution focused. In other words, I always assess whether CBT - is likely to be the most appropriate technique for each individual client, and each individual issue.
Training, qualifications & experience
I am a BACP Registered qualified and experienced Counsellor. My training and approach is based on the 'Integrative Model', which simply means that I employ a variety of therapeutic approaches, according to individual client needs.
In recent years I have worked in the 3rd Sector (Charities) and NHS Primary Care, in extremely varied ethnic / socio-economic / culturally diverse communities in urban environments.
Since 2011 I've focused primarily on my own private therapy practice - AJR Therapy - based in South Manchester, and covering Manchester City Centre, South Manchester, Stockport and North Cheshire.
Specialities: My particular areas of therapeutic experience include: depression, stress, anxiety, anger, loss, low self-esteem, body image, relationships, sexuality, psycho-sexual issues, men’s issues, lack of focus, direction or purpose in life, ageing and life stages, mindfulness, living an authentic life, internet addiction, porn addiction.
I like to think of myself as a creative and imaginative therapist — perhaps not conforming to any particular stereotypical image. I offer a free initial chat during which I can explain more about my background, experience and approaches to therapy, and of course answer any questions that you, as a potential client, may have.
This will help you to make an informed choice about talking therapies in general, and to choose the most appropriate therapist for you.
For a bit more information about my background, have a look at my LinkedIn profile.
