Men get Eating Disorders too!
July 22nd, 2009 by Jayne Cox
I get to work with some amazing individuals, both Male and Female. Sadly Male clients seeking support for their eating disorder/distress are few and far between. They might seek me as their Coach and together we discover an underlying issue with body image, self esteem and that eating disordered behaviour and thinking is a big part of the picture. Men do get ed's too.
Just because you're a guy doesn't mean your feelings and wellbeing don't matter or that your problems are less real. In fact feeling a minority or a fraud can ‘feed’ the negative and isolating mindset of an ed and that’s dangerous.
Anorexia, bulimia, binge/compulsive eating or any other eating distress and body image issue can and do affect you. So where to turn.
Once you recognize there’s a problem you can self refer to private individual therapists, such as myself, or a Clinic for assessment. You can visit your GP and be referred for therapy/counselling or look for helplines, local support groups or voluntary organisations for advice. Beat offers useful information and a list of therapists nationwide, of which I am one. www.b-eat.co.uk. Also Sam Thomas's project, Men Get ED's Too, www.mengetedstoo.co.uk is well worth a visit. It's just for men!
When you look for treatment and support with recovery it’s best to test the water first. Perhaps a friend, family member or partner can help. Find out the therapists experience with ed or how your GP feels about eating disorders in male sufferers. That first meeting is vital and your future recovery depends on working within a good relationship, that works for you. Empathy is priceless!
I offer a creative approach to recovery, no one size fits all and specialize in ed’s and weight/body issues. It’s not just about young men either, there’s never been a better time than now, no matter your age. Having experienced my own personal battle with anorexia, bulimia and compulsive eating some 20 years ago I understand the internal dialogue and feelings of helplessness and I also understand the process of recovery and positive change and how to help my clients. Male or Female, recovery is achievable, if you want it!
Remember it’s not about food but how you feel.
