Depression
March 7th, 2008 by Futureminds
As we movie into March many of us begin to feel more energetic and have a general feeling of wellbeing. However, for some continuing low moods or ‘depression’ can result in lack of motivation to do normal activities including work/social life/hobbies and interests. This lack of motivation can quickly escalate making the slightest activity a major hurdle.
Depression also affects our eating patterns and sleep routines so that we either struggle to get to sleep, get to sleep but wake in the early hours, or stay asleep all night but still wake up tired. Depression is now the number one psychological disorder in the Western world. Many people feel that their only solution is to receive medication from their GP. However, counselling/therapy is now seen as the most effective way to lift mild to moderate symptoms of depression fast and can also give individuals strategies to manage any future episodes.
People most prone to depression have high expectations of themselves or those around them, may be more sensitive/creative and take everything personally and finally when something ‘bad’ happens feel that it affects their whole life and will be permanent. Counselling can help challenge these thoughts. By explaining the cycle of depression and teach strategies on to how to break that cycle gives individuals the control they need to manage their lives and get back to their usual activities and interests. This does not mean long term counselling.
