David Gowling, UKCP Registered Psychotherapist.
I have worked for the past 30 years as a psychotherapist and have been involved with an extensive range of personal issues such as relationship problems, trauma, depression, anxiety.
My way of thinking about therapy is that we are deeply influenced by the environment we grew up in, and this can create patterns of thinking, feeling and behaviour which can limit how we experience ourselves and our place in the world.
In essence we are who we have been.
As a consequence often when we are faced by pressures from our everyday life which can challenge or potentially overwhelm our well established ways of coping we can find support and understanding through an empathic and thoughtful therapeutic relationship.
My focus would be on supporting you in understanding more fully the difficulties you are experiencing and look to bring about changes which can enhance your sense of self and your life.
I believe our therapeutic relationship will often mirror what you are troubled by and through our conversation and communication we can bring about change.
This can be by confronting the historical thinking patterns and begin to express more fully your emotional self, and also lead to a loosening of the emotional ties which have bound you into over rigid ways of thinking about yourself and your world.
I suggest that we have an initial session for exploration of the issues that you are feeling challenged by, and to see whether we both think that the support I can offer is relevant at this time.
We could then agree to work for a short period of time looking at particular issues (for instance work challenges, bereavement), or for a longer period addressing how experiences from your earlier life continue to detrimentally affect your current sense of self.
If you feel that this approach would be of benefit to you then please don't hesitate to make an initial contact.
