Counselling & Psychotherapy for Individuals
Everybody needs help sometimes. Even if we try our hardest to deny that. Maybe you can't or don't want to talk to the people you know, to friends or family. Sometimes the people we are the closest to are the ones we find the hardest to talk to. Maybe it is them that we need to talk about. Talking to a professional, someone 'outside it all' can be such a relief. It is a time and space just for you, where you are free to say whatever you need or want to, without any worries about, or need to protect, the other person.
Therapy is a shared endeavour. I don't have a list of answers. I am willing to be alongside you as together we seek your answers. Together we will identify what is causing you difficulties, and together we will look for ways to make your life better. Sometimes current issues are deeply routed in the past, and we will be weaving between the past and the present. They might be 'played out' in our relationships, and can also come alive in the relationship between us, client and therapist.
Talking might not be enough. There may be no words. Our physical and emotional experiences and wellbeing are inextricably linked. Physical symptoms and pain are often the manifestation of emotional distress. We will explore your whole being, your thoughts, feelings, sensations, your physical and emotional pain, everything that is you.
Hopefully you will end therapy in a better place than you started it. It might hurt more before it gets better. You can stick a plaster on a deep wound with grit or dirt stuck in it and it will probably soothe it. But the only way it can completely heal is to clean it out, take care of it, let the fresh air in, and allow the healing process to take effect.
Couples & Relationship Counselling
Relationships aren't always easy and sometimes they need some very focused care and attention. Many things can impact upon and strain our relationships, for example: affairs, a child coming into the relationship , children growing up and leaving home, job changes/redundancy, cultural issues, bereavements, other life changes, the list is many. Our relationships can be a solid and loving place to support us, if we give them the attention they need and deserve.
Together we will identify the difficulties in the relationship, explore how these have arisen and are maintained in the relationship. We then work on healthier and more productive ways of being in relationship. Sometimes relationships need to end, and we can find the healthiest way for that to happen.
My work with couples is based on a brief therapy model. We have an initial, no obligation, assessment session where we look at the issues you are bringing, make a plan to address them, and agree likely session frequency, duration and number. Then you will be asked to go away, discuss things, and decide - together - if you would like to commence couples therapy with me. Generally this will be between six and eight sessions, occasionally with some follow up sessions after a few months.
By helping you to find your own ways to take your relationship forward, and to help yourselves on a continuing basis, I aim to make myself unnecessary to you as soon possible.
