Counselling & Psychotherapy for Individuals
Sometimes, we all need a little help. Maybe you don't want to talk to the people you know, friends and family, maybe there isn't anyone you feel you can talk to. Sometimes the people we are the closest to are the ones we find the hardest to talk to. Maybe it is them that we need to talk about. Talking to a professional, someone who is 'outside it all' can be such a relief. It is a time and space just for you, where you are free to say whatever you need to, without any worries about, or need to take care of, the other person.
Therapy begins by talking. It's a shared endeavour. I don't have all the answers. I am willing to be alongside you as together we seek your answers. Together we will identify what is causing you difficulties, and together we will look for ways to make your life better. Sometimes current issues are deeply routed in the past, and we will be weaving between the past and the present. Often they will be 'played out' in our relationships, and can come alive in the relationship that as client and therapist we will form.
Whatever the issues, sometimes talking just isn't enough. Sometimes what has happened to us just doesn't have words. We are more than just minds and bodies, we are complex beings where our physical and emotional experiences are inextricably linked. Physical symptoms are often the manifestation of emotional distress. As such we will explore your whole being, your thoughts, feelings, sensations, your physical and emotional pain, everything that makes you, you.
We will be working toward you ending therapy in a better place than you started it. Sometimes it will hurt more before it gets better. It's like a deep wound with grit or dirt stuck in it. You can put some antiseptic and a plaster on and it might well soothe it. The only way it will truly heal is to clean it out, let the fresh air in, take care of it and let our innate drive to heal take its course.
Couples & Relationship Counselling
Relationships aren't always easy and sometimes they need to be worked at even harder. There are many things which can impact on and put strain on our relationships. Our relationships can be a solid and loving place to support us, if we give them the attention they deserve. Sometimes we may realise that our current relationship is not a healthy and loving place for us to be, and a different way forward is needed.
As a couples therapist, I can help you both to explore the issues which are causing you problems, and support you to find your way through them, whatever that may be. That may be about how the relationship can be improved, or how it can end in the 'best' possible way for both of you.
Couples work is frequently, though not always, short term, often between six and eight sessions.

I have been working in various counselling and psychotherapeutic roles since 1989. Prior to this I worked in the public sector and also the NHS in general, mental health and forensic nursing.
In supervision I continue my philosophy of empowerment by supporting the supervisee to find their best way to be with their clients as well as helping the supervisee to look at their own process and how that impacts their client work and therapeutic relationships.
