About me

Are you bereaved, depressed, feeling overwhelmed and wondering what will help?  Or looking for avenues of self development for personal and/or professional needs?  Then maybe I can be of help.

Seeking help, reaching out when we realise we are troubled and seriously struggling can sometimes seem an inexplicably difficult hurdle to overcome.  Whatever your life is lacking, whatever is getting you down, you need not suffer alone and in silence.

Overwhelmed with the impacts of bereavement, relationship issues, anger, depression or a combination of them all? Life and the challenges we face can at times become too much to manage. Many of the difficulties we experience as adults had their beginnings in childhood. Counselling and psychotherapy can enable you to engage with your often complex emotional histories, where rejection, separation and bereavement have been revived through current adversity. The loss of a cherished idea of our-selves can sometimes be the precipitate to dysfunction and breakdown.

Sometimes we find that repeated patterns of behaviour create havoc in our relationships with families, partners or at work and we are at a loss as to how to understand what happens. Overwhelming feelings seem to overtake us. Understanding where the feelings come from and why we might have them serve to give us the capacity to make a choice - the choice to change something ... or not.

Perhaps it is not so much a specific problem you are trying to address, maybe you want to pursue your personal development and growth or you feel you have lost your way. Counselling and psychotherapy can be a meaningful pilgrimage to find the essence of who you are. It takes emotional courage to engage in this work; it is a journey to ourselves and what better way to invest in our lives and our future than to plumb the depths of our being in the company of another who can safely witness our earliest and most vulnerable experiences.

What I provide is a safe confidential space within a professional setting for you to explore your world, inner and outer, to experience sorrow as well as joy, the strength for which can be found in the longing to live fully and the willingness to settle for nothing less.

I work from a psychodynamic perspective where your early experiences of growing up can be seen to be at work within the way that you relate to those who are currently within your circle of contacts inside and outside your immediate family and friends. These ways of relating will over time become present within the client/counsellor-therapist relationship where the familiar difficulties can be experienced differently. My Jungian training gives importance to dreams, imagery and spirituality which can facilitate transformation and healing.

I tend to work long term, at once a week frequency leading to greater frequency if needed; shorter term work can be offered where it is appropriate. These details and others can be discussed at the initial appointment.

My consulting room is situated just off Queen Square a few minutes walk from Milsom Street and the town centre.   There are a number of car parks to be found on Google; the Green Park Sainsbury's is a five minute walk away.  The rail and bus stations are within 10-15 minutes walk.

Training, qualifications & experience

I have 20 years plus experience as a  qualified counsellor, psychotherapist and clinical supervisor of qualified counsellors, counsellors in training and psychotherapists. I have an established private practice which I set up in 2000.

The organisations I have worked for are Cruse Bereavement as a counsellor; Wessex Counselling Service as a counsellor, an approved therapist for their trainees and training supervisor; Southside Family Project as a counsellor and supervisor; Penny Brohn Cancer Care as a supervisor.

I am an Associate Member of Wessex Counselling Service from whom I gained a diploma in counselling in 1999. At that time Wessex was affiliated to and accredited by Westminster Pastoral Foundation, London.

I am a registered member of the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (MBACP) and abide by their Code of Ethics and Good Practice.

I am a Professional member of West Midlands Institute of Psychotherapy qualified as a Jungian Analytical Psychotherapist and registered with UKCP.  I also abide by their Code of Ethics and Good Practice.

Member organisations

Registered / Accredited

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

UKCP
UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP)

The UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) is a leading professional body for the education, training and regulation of psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors. Its register is accredited by the government's Professional Standards Authority.

As part of its commitment to protect the public, it works to improve access to psychotherapy, to support and disseminate research, to improve standards and to respond effectively to complaints against its members.

UKCP standards cover the range of different psychotherapies. Registration is obtained by training or accrediting with one of its member organisations, or by holding a European Certificate in Psychotherapy. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.
