About me

I believe that a client's experience should be one of feeling fully heard and understood in a safe environment which I endeavour to provide in both face to face settings, online and via the telephone. My website,  www.thehaining.com offers more information about how and where I work and I am happy to answer any questions or concerns via email or over the phone. Issues I commonly work with are couples and relational difficulties, ( including family therapy ) anxiety, generalised anxiety disorder, depression bipolar disorder/manic depression and panic disorder.

There are many reasons for seeking therapeutic support throughout our lives. The therapeutic alliance offers you a safe, supportive and confidential place to explore difficulties in your personal life with someone who is trained neither to judge, nor tell you what to do, but to accompany you as you begin to unlock and explore your feelings; some of which may have remained hidden for years. From this beginning you may come to understand more about yourself, feel less confused and isolated, make changes, or come to terms with the things which cannot be changed. The Person Centred Approach values the individual and his or her own instincts in knowing what action to take. I also work eclectically in other approaches, including CBT and Psychodynamic, depending on the needs of the individual or the referring organization.

  • “My partner left me three years ago and I don’t understand why I still feel so lonely and depressed.”
  • “We used to have so much in common but we seem to be growing apart.”
  • “I hate my life and work. I feel like running away.”
  • “Whatever I do or achieve, it never feels like enough. I feel like a failure.”
  • “I think my parents hated me.”
  • “I am forty years old yet I feel frightened, like a child, and I don’t know why.”
  • “People are always telling me what to do but nobody really cares or listens.”
  • I was abused when I was a child.

You may be feeling upset, depressed, anxious, frustrated stressed or a sense of loss. These feelings may apply only to you or involve relationships with others.

Relational Therapy:

Relational Therapy can support any close relationship where communication has broken down.

  • “Our teenage son treats our house like a hotel and never listens to a word I say.”
  • “My wife treats me like a child.”
  • “My same sex partner is totally uncommunicative. I wish I could reach him.”
  • “My parents always presume to know better than me what is right for me.”
  • “My husband is more interested in watching porn than being intimate with me.”
  • “My wife had an affair. I don’t think I can ever forgive her.”

Other relational issues:

Psychosexual issues include – Erectile dysfunction, inability to achieve orgasm, sex and porn addiction, loss of libido, pain or inability to have penetrative intercourse, premature ejaculation and the menopause and its effects.

Training, qualifications & experience

Graduating from the University of Strathclyde, in Glasgow, in 2001 I completed the process necessary to be granted accreditation by the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy the following year and have since achieved Registered Senior Accreditation status.

I meet the requirement for annual renewal of accreditation, which is a commitment to engage in at least thirty hours of ongoing professional development each year.

Meeting this criterion, I have completed advanced training in specialisms including couple and family therapy, critical incident debriefing, and post traumatic stress counselling. I have engaged in counselling research toward a MSc degree and qualified as a counselling supervisor in 2003.

I receive referrals from many sources including Employee Assistance Providers (EAP's) eg. BUPA Psychological Services, The University of Strathclyde's Counselling Unit, G.P. practices and by 'word of mouth' from previous clients.

Member organisations

Registered / Accredited

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

Fees

Additional information

My fees range from £50 for a one off individual session to £240 ( £40 per session ) for a block booked standard minimum agreement of six sessions. I am willing to work to a time limited contract and to negotiate a reduction in fees for clients experiencing financial hardship. See my website for more details.

When I work

I am available Monday to Friday and Saturday mornings. Early evening appointments also available.

Further information

The landline number shown above is a line dedicated to my practice and is private and confidential.  I will also respond to text messages to my mobile phone.  If I am already working when you call please feel free to leave your name and number. As soon as I have returned your call your original message will be deleted.

It can be stressful making the first contact with a therapist.  Many individuals report feeling they might be wasting the time of the therapist or that there issues aren't 'important enough'.  The first contact with me is all about assessing your issues and deciding together if you have the right person for you to work with,
The first session or two gives you an opportunity to share why you are seeking support and leads to us working together on your process, (or unique way of engaging and dealing with your concerns).  Finally we review where we started from and what the outcome is, at the end of the work.

For some, a standard six session agreement is enough to provide the tools necessary to work on alone.  For others a commitment to continue in either a therapeutic alliance or work on in a personal development capacity will feel right.  You can end the agreement at any time you choose.
