I am an experienced and accredited counsellor and an EMDR Europe accredited Practitioner. Counselling offers space for you to talk about your problems in a confidential setting, and find ways of coping better. We all have hidden resources inside, and counselling can help us to tap into these resources, explore inner conflicts, increase our self-esteem, and have better relationships.
I trained in gestalt therapy from 1986-9, and then as an integrative psychosynthesis counsellor at Re-Vision from 2001-5. I have a holistic approach which includes mind, body, heart, soul and spirit.
I trained in EMDR in 2012, and I usually suggest it as part of our work, because I find it is so effective at healing the past which usually underlies the current problem.
EMDR therapy (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is a powerful therapeutic approach which enables the brain to heal memories of distressing past experiences, which at the time were not adequately processed and filed away. These "stuck" memories can give rise to difficulties, such as anxiety or low self-esteem, which may surface many years later. By stimulating the brain's natural self-healing abilities, EMDR therapy appears to enable the nervous system to process, or "file", the memory, by connecting the part of the brain where the memory is stored with another part, which has the useful information necessary to resolve the problem. This results in a reduction in distressing symptoms, and a more neutral or helpful perspective on the past experience.
EMDR therapy is practised in many countries, and is consistently reported in research to be effective in significantly reducing or eliminating symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). It is approved by NICE (National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence) and the World Health Organization as a treatment for PTSD. It is also being successfully used by EMDR practitioners to treat symptoms such as anxiety, depression, relationship problems and low self-esteem. Sometimes, articles in the media can give the impression that EMDR can be done in one or two sessions. Occasionally, simple cases of adult trauma can be dealt with very quickly, but in my experience, most people require a longer period of time to deal with more complex problems.
We start with talking about your significant past memories, your current issues and what you would like to gain from our work. I will explain to you how EMDR works, and will prepare you by establishing resources that you can use yourself, including simple relaxation techniques. We will then process the memories we have agreed on. These phases of history-taking and preparation vary in how long they take, according to your circumstances
During sleep, we have periods of dream sleep, sometimes called Rapid Eye Movement sleep. This is a natural coping mechanism in which the eyes move rapidly from side to side while the brain processes and stores experiences from the day. EMDR therapy stimulates this self-healing capacity of the brain while you are awake by using short sequences of eye movements, or other bilateral stimulation (BLS), such as alternating sounds, or tappers which you hold in each hand, as you focus on specific aspects of the distressing memory. I will encourage you to "just notice" what happens, and will check with you frequently to ensure the process is going smoothly. You will find that gradually the memory will start to feel less vivid and upsetting, and you will feel more positive about your own situation. (EMDR is not the same as hypnosis, as you are fully awake and in control at all times). As well as working with past memories, EMDR therapy also reduces the frequency and intensity of present triggers, enables you to develop inner resources and helps you to achieve your goals in the future.
My work is guided by the BACP's Guide to Ethical Practice in Counselling and Psychotherapy. I have professional insurance and a CRB check.
