Profile
My name is Nicola and I am a warm empathetic person and as a counsellor I am committed to helping my clients. I believe that a good strong therapeutic relationship is vital to the counselling process and that everyone is unique.
As a qualified counsellor and supervisor I have experience of working within the Primary Care Service, South Yorkshire Eating Disorders Association, Together Women Project and working privately.
I have training and interest in different forms of counselling: therefore I take an integrative approach in my work. This involves working with several distinct models of counselling and psychotherapy and allows me to adapt my techniques to the personal problems that are unique to the individual. For example I have training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy which I use to identify unhelpful patterns of thinking and behaviour and to work with the client to resolve these issues. I have experience of other approaches in particular Psychosynthesis which can be helpful in understanding the different parts of us. I find this particularly helpful if someone is struggling to understand why they act the way they do especially if their behaviour is self destructive. My recent training and experience centres around destructive coping mechanisms, such as sex addiction.
My experience is of working with clients with a wide range of issues, I regularly work with issues including depression, anxiety, sexual and physical abuse, neglect, domestic abuse, anger, alcohol addiction, drug addiction. I have particular interest in working with eating disorders, OCD, trauma, psychosomatic issues, sex addiction, borderline and narcissistic personality disorders.
Training, Qualifications & Experience
My work within Primary Care has been with a particular emphasis on suicide and self harm prevention. Suicide is distressing to those experiencing the thoughts and feelings and also for those around them. Clients often feel a sense of hopelessness and despair, not able to understand why they feel the way they do, why they cant focus, concentrate or finish sentences and in more severe cases feel that suicide is the only option.
From receiving therapy myself I know how difficult it is to approach a counsellor and understand much of the anxiety that goes along with meeting for the first time. I am mindful of this and try as much as possible to put my clients at ease during our sessions.
I truly believe that counselling provides an opportunity for clients to progress towards a more satisfying way of life. It provides you with the opportunity to find your own solutions to personal emotional problems. I always work within a private and confidential setting to help my clients feel safe.
