Having worked as counsellor and psychotherapist for 10 years I am still amazed at the resilience and resourcefulness of my clients! I have been a client myself so I understand the courage needed - I feel that being trusted to walk with someone through the tough times is a great privilege and something I never take lightly.
I have run my own private practice throughout and also work as an NHS and EAP (workplace) counsellor. Whilst I don't believe in a 'quick fix' I have worked effectively with a wide range of clients from all walks of life. I always begin with listening to your own understanding, gently explore what has brought you here, find out your own resources and strengths, interests and sadness, loss or pain, anxiety or fears.
There is no 'one size fits all' but I have some tried and tested approaches to working.
I approach 'anxiety' with an understanding of how frightening and life restricting the physical symptoms are and offer relaxation/breathing/mindfulness techniques to manage these, small step experiments to face the fear, and encouragement to build a package of strategies that work for you.
With depression we might explore some of the roots causes but also look at the benefits of small changes of nutrition/exercise/rest and relaxation. As depression and loneliness are often intertwined we might look at some ways to tackle isolation.
For work - stress related problems we would look some of the above strategies but also consider workplace communication and roles, managing pressure and expectations, and the importance of keeping good boundaries.
With issues stemming from loss, change or bereavement we allow the natural grieving processes to happen, trusting in the real benefits of expression and self acceptance.
In adult relationship difficulties, we might consider the childhood patterns, influences and expectations we bring into adult loves.
In my practice I have worked with many clients who have experienced childhood abuse of various kinds, and who suffer the ongoing effects of trauma. My experience is that the long term damage often needs slower and longer term therapy - establishing real safety and trust before looking at the painful and sometimes hidden past.
