Counsellor Profile

I have over twenty years counselling experience of working with individuals and couples and a training that includes psychodynamic, cognitive behavioural and other approaches, allowing me to provide intergrative counselling that is specific to each persons particular difficulties. Over the years I have found that counselling has really helped people I have worked with to overcome difficulties and to move forward . To see the progress that people are able to make instils in me the greatest respect and has motivated me to continue the work that I do.

For any of us, life events, poor health, problems at work, or difficulties in our relationships can impact on our well-being, or for no apparent reason we may feel low, lack self-motivation and self-esteem or we may feel angry, stressed, or highly anxious. Sometimes problems from the past re-surface leaving us troubled and confused, or we may be experiencing behaviours that are unhelpful or control our lives. If you are experiencing any of these or other difficulties, the counselling I offer can help by providing a safe, non-judgemental, caring, confidential environment to explore and understand these difficulties. This leads to empowerment, development of strategies, better-informed choices and change that will improve well-being and enhance life.

For couples, the provision of a neutral environment can enable discussion that may be too uncomfortable or risky in other surroundings. Couple counselling can improve communication, explore and understand destructive patterns, facilitate sharing of feelings, address sexual difficulties and acknowledge the pressures of life on the couple relationship. Sometimes it is about looking at the viability of the relationship.

A psychodynamic approach explores the events, relationships and feelings that shape us and may contribute to current difficulties. It enables you to make sense of why you feel and respond as you do, why you may repeat unhelpful behaviours or patterns in life and through insights gained, make changes. A cognitive behavioural approach addresses and changes negative thought patterns and behaviours, replacing them with more positive and beneficial responses. Where appropriate and in consultation with you, I also use Transactional Analysis and Gestalt approaches.

For couples with sexual problems, which can cause great distress to a relationship, my training as a psychosexual therapist enables discussion about a subject which is often difficult to address. A sex therapy programme can be an effective way of improving the sexual relationship and problems.
