James O’Neill has been working in the field of counselling and psychotherapy for the past twenty years at his practice at CLAPHAM COMMON just off Clapham High Street, South London.He is highly qualified (M.Sc.,M.E.S.,M.A.,Member of the Site for Contemporary psychoanalysis and the Philadelphia Association)
He has a strong academic background and many years training and experience consulting in psychoanalytic psychotherapy and counselling. He is also a teacher and practitioner of mindfulness meditation and is skilled in working with bereavement, anger management, psychosexual issues, couple counselling, depression, anxiety, relationship problems and issues around sexuality and sexual orientation.
James does both short-term crisis resolution work with couples and individuals as well as long term psychoanalytic explorations with individuals. He is also a trainer and teacher of psychotherapy and counselling. He provides clinical supervision to a range of practitioners engaged in therapeutic work. He works with adult victims of child abuse on behalf of the Irish government and is a consultant therapist for the BUPA employee assistance counselling scheme. He is also an experienced couple therapist/counsellor working with both straight and gay couples.
He is currently writing a book covering sexual and emotional traumas suffered in early childhood and the obstacles to creative expression in language.
Training, qualifications & experience
James trained as a psychiatric paramedic in Canada in the 1970's and have an M.Sc in counselling psychology from Roehampton. He did a five year psychoanalytic training at the Philadelphia Association in London completed in 1996. Since finishing his training he has kept pace with the academic side of the work and is a training therapist at the Philadelphia Association and the Site for Contemporary Psychoanalysis and a member of the College of Psychoanalysts. He works with a wide range of presenting problems including sexual concerns, addictions, anxiety,obsessions, life work, relationship and spiritual concerns.He works with couples,both gay and straight, to help them with the challenges of relating, on how to try to rescue a relationship which is in difficulty and where the sex life and other communications are stuck.
James is also a senior teacher and trainer of mindfulness and insight meditation.
