Counsellor Profile

James O’Neill is a highly qualified and experienced psychotherapist, counsellor and clinical supervisor with an independent practice at CLAPHAM COMMON just off Clapham High Street, South London.

He has a strong academic background and many years training and experience consulting in psychoanalytic psychotherapy and counselling.

James does both short-term crisis resolution work with couples and individuals as well as long term psychoanalytic explorations with individuals. He is also a trainer and teacher of psychotherapy and counselling. He provides clinical supervision to a range of practitioners engaged in therapeutic work. He works with adult victims of child abuse on behalf of the Irish government and is a consultant therapist for the BUPA employee assistance counselling scheme. He is also an experienced couple therapist/counsellor working with both straight and gay couples.

James trained as a psychiatric paramedic in Canada and have an M.Sc in counselling psychology from Roehampton. He did a five year psychoanalytic training at the Philadelphia Association in London completed in 1996. Since finishing his training he has kept pace with the academic side of the work and is a training therapist at the Philadelphia Association and the Site for Contemporary Psychanalysis. He works with a wide range of presenting problems including sexual concerns, addictions, anxiety,obsessions, life work, relationship and spiritual concerns.
