About me

I am a psychoanalytic psychotherapist and psychoanalyst registered with the British Psychoanalytic Council, and a member of the British Psychoanalytic Association and the International Psychoanalytical Association. I first trained as a psychodynamic psychotherapist with the WPF in London, and then as a psychoanalytic psychotherapist and psychoanalyst with the BPF and the BPA . I specialise in long term open ended psychoanalytic psychotherapy and psychoanalysis.

Psychoanalytic therapy can help with difficulties that have an emotional or psychological cause. All people experience emotional problems at some point in their lives, and these can often be dealt with without outside help. However, sometimes the problems remain hidden in our unconscious, and are repeated because current issues stir up feelings from the past and affect our ability to cope.

This sort of therapy is based on the idea that what we experience as a conscious difficulty may be a solution to an unconscious problem. Although we may sometimes try to get rid of these problems by keeping them out of our minds, these unconscious problems can make us behave in ways which are contrary to what is best for us, and even make us distressed or ill. These patterns of behaviour usually have their roots in relationships and events experienced in early infancy and childhood that may be re-activated by later trauma or stressful situations.

Being in therapy provides an opportunity to explore and work through these unhelpful patterns by means of the relationship that develops between the client and the therapist; unresolved feelings and patterns of our inner world can be expressed, played out, understood and worked through in the safe, private and confidential place offered by the therapist. In this safe setting emotional conflicts can be relived and new solutions found to old problems.

Psychoanalytic therapy can help with a variety of difficulties that have an emotional or psychological cause - these emotional problems can be experienced in a variety of ways such as:

  • Feelings of anxiety and inability to concentrate or cope.
  • Feelings of emptiness, futility or depression.
  • Extreme mood swings or uncontrollable anger.
  • Low self esteem or lack of confidence.
  • Difficulty in making or sustaining relationships.
  • Repeated patterns of destructive relationships.
  • Sexual problems.
  • Shyness and isolation.
  • Addictive behaviour.
  • Obsessional or compulsive behaviour.
  • Long term difficulties following losses such as bereavement, divorce or job loss.
  • Sleep problems and nightmares.
  • Phobias.
  • Panic attacks.
  • Eating disorders.
  • Bodily symptoms without physical cause.

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BPC
British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC)

The British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC) is a professional association, representing the profession of psychoanalytic psychotherapy.

The organisation is itself made up of fourteen member organisations and BPC accredits the trainings of its member organisations. An individual who qualifies from one of these trainings is then eligible for entry into the BPC's register.

BPC registrants are governed by a code of ethics, a policy of continuing professional development, a statement on confidentiality and a complaints procedure. The BPC is a Member Society of the European Federation for Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy in the Public Sector (EFPP). Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.

Further information

BEGINNING THERAPY

If you would like to book an initial consultation then please contact me either by telephone or email to arrange an appointment. I will try to respond within 24 hours.

You may have questions and concerns about beginning psychotherapy, and so we begin with an initial consultation which provides an opportunity for you to talk through your reasons for seeking therapy at this time, and to enable us to think about whether psychoanalytic therapy can be of help to you. In order allow enough time to explore things in enough depth, this consultation will be longer than the usual session, or we may decide to have two 50 minute sessions which allows more time for reflection before you make a decision about whether to go ahead.

THE SESSIONS

If you decide you want to go ahead, we will make an agreement to meet at the same time (or times) each week for the ongoing work, which is open-ended. These ongoing sessions last for 50 minutes each.

The therapy may be on a once weekly basis, but for in depth psychotherapy and psychoanalysis it is usual to meet more frequently (two or more times per week).
