'How counselling can help'
Now, more than ever in our busy lives, we need to nurture our mental well-being.Whatever the issues, whether they are overwhelming at times, or sometimes seem too trivial to mention, talking about them in a safe space can help to release the pressure that contributes to mental and physical pain.
As a mature counsellor with many years experience, I can provide that space. Change can be a scary and risky business, but the rewards can be enormous. As a person-centred counsellor, I will work with you so that change takes place at your pace. The focus is on assisting you to grow and cope better, not just with present problems, but also for you to manage any future issues.
Although counselling is a "talking therapy" there are numerous approaches. I also offer some CBT (cognitive behaviour therapy) and relaxation and visualisation techniques if appropriate.
In these difficult economic times, looking after ourselves emotionally can seem an indulgence, but is it? If we don't look after ourselves, how can we be there for others?
'What to expect in your first session'
I offer an initial half hour session for £20. During this session I will take notes (but not in subsequent sessions). More than anything, this is our opportunity to decide if this is the right place for you. Some potential clients choose to speak to several therapists before deciding the one for them and I believe this is a good thing to do.
If you decide to proceed with counselling I would encourage you to make weekly appointment, particularly at the beginning. However, I realise the impracticality for some people, so would be happy with fortnightly appointments. Full one hour sessions are £40 for one person and £45 per couple.
How long you continue coming is entirely up to you, although one of my initial questions is "What do you hope to achieve from our sessions?"
Some clients are very specific in their goals but quite often they are much more fluid. I would offer regular reviews to make sure you are happy with progress.
I work from my own counselling room at home in Downend and offer early evening as well as daytime appointments to help with juggling work and childcare. My house is on a main road served by two bus routes from Bristol and Yate/Chipping Sodbury area. Parking is not possible outside but there is plenty of on-street parking as well as a car park 5 minutes walk away.
Training, qualifications & experience
I have a Post Graduate Diploma in Counselling from Bristol University (2004) and am a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (MBACP). I abide by their ethical guidelines and receive regular supervision.
I also have specific training in bereavement counselling.
Areas of counselling I deal with
- Emotional abuse
- Family issues
- Generalised anxiety disorder
- Low self-confidence
- Low self-esteem
- Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD)
- Panic disorder
- Personality disorders
The initial half hour session costs £20. This session is to enable us to meet and assess your needs and aims. Together we can look at these and decide if this is the right place for you as it is important for us both to feel comfortable.
If you decide to continue, subsequent sessions are a full hour and cost £40 for one person and £45 per couple.
I book sessions week to week so there is no pressure to book a fixed number of sessions. Initially though and if possible, I would recommend weekly sessions, with regular reviews.
