Counsellor Profile

I have been an independent therapist since 1989, maintaining a private counselling, psychotherapy and supervision practice in central York. The type of individual counselling and psychotherapy I offer is Integrative and Transactional Analysis therapy, both in an intensive short brief-dynamic format and a longer-term developmental format.

If a problem is particularly suited to a Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) approach we will utilise CBT methodology.

I lead a weekly psychotherapy group in central York, offer group therapy weekends, and offer combined individual and group therapy if appropriate. My groupwork is Integrative/TA, very influenced both by Transactional Analysis and my training and experience in group analysis.

The psychotherapy I offer is particularly suited for people who are experiencing emotional problems: sadness, loss, frustration, anger, betrayal, anxiety, alienation, loneliness, depression, tendencies to self-harm. Integrative/TA psychotherapy can be effective in resolving issues which block self-expression, inhibit aspiration and dull life-satisfaction. The therapy I offer is well-suited to addressing relationship problems that may have begun in early family experiences: issues of trust and attachment, belonging and intimacy, creativity, self-expression and self-confidence.

I provide a very real and lively face-to-face therapeutic relationship within a safe, confidential and boundaried analytic relationship.

The therapy I offer enables thoughts, feelings and problematic behaviours to be explored as they arise. The immediate therapeutic goal would be for us to make sense of what is happening in the relationship between us so that your problems with yourself and others in the outside world can be better understood and resolved.

I am an American with a background in Humanities, Social Sciences and the Arts. My clinical work is influenced by my personal experience of meditation, psychodrama, group analysis, psychotherapy and psychoanalysis.

The Supervision I offer has a theoretical foundation of Transactional Analysis and Integrative Psychotherapy. My most recent Supervisor Development course was with the British Association for Psychotherapists (BAP) in London in 2004. Clinically, I am especially interested in issues of attachment, in working with the therapeutic relationship, and in exploring unconscious processes.

As a Supervisor, I am particularly interested in supervising newly qualified practitioners to establish and develop professional and successful therapeutic practices.
