Counselling and stress management are for people who want to take more control over their lives and need support in order to do so. I can help you identify and clarify problems. We will work together to discover strategies that when implemented will provide the motivation to enable you to move forward with confidence. I can assist with a variety of issues which will achieve long term positive changes.
How I work
I have an integrative approach to counselling and psychotherapy and use non-directive methods in the exploration stage, moving into Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) when appropriate.
CBT helps change ways of thinking ("Cognitive") and therefore ways of behaving ("Behaviour)". These changes help clients feel better quickly and unlike some of the other talking treatments, CBT centres on problems in the 'here and now' and does not dwell on the past.
The positive effects of CBT are well researched and documented. Clinical trials suggest that CBT has been successful in addressing various emotional problems. It has been shown, in the short term, to be as effective as medication for the treatment of many non-severe depressive and anxiety disorders including phobias. In the longer term, the effects of CBT will continue to protect clients from further illness. People who finish medication without the benefits of CBT may be at greater risk of relapse compared to CBT clients, who have learned principles and strategies to sustain recovery.
I work positively with clients regardless of age, gender, disability, cultural and religious background or sexual preference.
What to expect during your session
At the beginning of the first session, I will explain in some detail the way I work and will give ample opportunity for you to ask questions and verify my qualifications etc. If at this stage, you decide not to proceed or you would like to have time to consider whether you wish to commence counselling, no charge will be made. If you are happy to continue with a full counselling session, the normal charges (see Counselling Fees) will apply.
There is no charge for brief email or telephone communication between appointments. Sometimes clients find this helpful and it is part of the service provided.

It has been a common experience for many people seeking urgent help in times of crisis to find that it is impossible to get an appointment quickly enough. The online/telephone service I provide is an answer to this problem. Contacting me via email or telephone will result in an early response and arrangement for a scheduled phone call, or a detailed email response.
Telephone counselling sessions
These work very well for people who find it difficult to access counselling, or prefer not to be in a face to face situation. You can book a telephone session by e-mail and pay for the session as detailed on the Fees page of this website. I will then call you on the land line number. You will have paid for my time and I pay for the call. You do not have to give your name, if you prefer to preserve your anonymity.
Online counselling via e-mail
Online Counselling via email is particularly suitable if you have hearing problems. It also allows you access to help on issues of concern from the comfort of your own home, at a time that suits. I have a number of resources in terms of links to other relevant websites and focused information leaflets etc that can also be of help in many situations.
Please contact me using my details at the top of this page to discuss online or telephone counselling further.
My counselling practice is based at Middlemarch in Normandy which is easily accessbile and within 15 minutes drive of Guildford, Woking, Aldershot and Farnham It is situated on the A323 close to the Hoggs Back (A31) and the A3, with the M3 and M25 nearby.

"Steve is a kind and empathic counsellor, as a couple we had struggled with our partnership and there was no longer any fun in our lives. Things were looking extremely bleak for us. Our sessions with Steve helped us both get our lives back on track and perhaps more importantly rediscovered our love for each other."
"Thank you Steve for helping us find our way again, our meetings helped us identify where we were going wrong. The ‘homework’ that was set rekindled the romance in our lives that had gradually disappeared over a number of years." T.G.
"Steve has a very open and honest approach to counselling, which I found very refreshing. He has put a tailor-made course of CBT together for me, which is helping me greatly."
"I would recommend Steve to anyone who is looking for some counselling. He is an extremely approachable, relaxed and honest person." B.G.
