Counsellor Profile

I am an experienced psychodynamic counsellor working with individual clients long or short term.

In my private practice I usually work with someone over an extended period of time, although the length of time varies depending on the individual. While I also work in different settings and with different client groups, the underlying aim of my work remains the same. To help someone identify what is causing them to feel anxious or unhappy and to enable them to better understand and confront their difficulties. I work particularly with the hidden thoughts and feelings which, without you realising it, can prevent you from making the changes you would like to make in your life.

I started my career in counselling working for Childline, and I retain an ongoing interest in working with vulnerable children and young people. I currently work with troubled adolescents providing psychotherapy consultancy in an NHS setting. I also see adults in primary care (GP) counselling where people are given time-limited therapy which means 6 or 8 sessions. I am a member of two professional bodies, the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the Foundation for Counselling and Psychotherapy (FPC) and I work according to their ethical guidelines. Part of these guidelines involve putting safeguards in place, such as a formal complaints procedure, so that clients can be sure they are being treated professionally and ethically.

Coming into counselling is a commitment and involves you in the process of thinking about your worries and fears. It is not that the counsellor can 'make you better', but that you can work together with the counsellor to explore things. It is therefore a good idea to talk early on about whether you feel counselling is right for you at this time and so that you can better understand what the process involves. One or more sessions initially can be useful to clarify this and decide whether you think counselling might be useful.
