Counsellor Profile

I run a small private practice from my home in Kingsley, Cheshire and run workshops - topics ranging from "Increasing Self Confidence"; "Stress Management"; "Methods of Relaxation" to "Surviving Bereavement".

I have worked, on a voluntary basis, at an Addiction Therapy Centre both 1:1 with clients and in Group Therapy.

I became disabled 4 years ago (cervical dystonia) but this has not deterred me from counselling – a career that is not just a job but my passion. I feel my disability has made me a stronger and more empathic individual. My "internal vocabulary" has changed in a positive sense - the word "problem" has become "challenge".

Since becoming disabled I have had an autobiographical, self-help book published; have had several articles published in professional journals and a national women's magazine; I've spoken at conferences and to local self help groups on the efficacy of counselling in relation to disability; run workshops on a cruise liner and have won a national championship at RDA (riding for the disabled). Horses have always played a large part in my life from the age of 10. I'm still that little Thelwellian girl in plaits, at heart, riding her podgy pony, even though I'm nearly 50!!! Horses are my "de-stressor" after a hard day's work.

I hope this doesn't sound that I'm saying, "How wonderful I am!" because I'm, most certainly, not. I've just had to adapt to new limitations and seek other areas in my personal situation to find new life quality. And, believe me, it IS good!

This is something I try and impress on my clients, that no matter what our circumstances may be - either physical or psychological - we CAN improve our own life quality but there is a need to be proactive in this. Sometimes, it can mean making physical changes or it can be learning how to look/deal with a situation in a different, more "life friendly" way.

I truly believe, as is the philosophy of Person-Centred counselling, that each one of us is expert in our own lives, even if we may have lost touch with this part of self or didn't even realise it existed.

My aim when counselling is not for the client to become dependant on the therapist but for the individual to find his/her personal expert from within and learn new skills, to tackle whatever problems life may bestow.

My part is to help the client "dig deeper" within, to find this, perhaps dormant at present, power. I see my role as accompanying them on this journey as a supportive and empathic guide. Client empowerment is my aim for each individual I have the privilege to work with.
