Profile

Specialist relationship/sexual therapy; trauma . Accredited, v.experienced, warm, genuinely interested, trustworthy. See Cornerstone website for more info about me and my Associates. I am also Programme Director for The Academy - a private training school for counselling and psychotherapy.

My own particular interests are in couple/relationship counselling including sexual therapy (for individuals and couples of any orientation) and EMDR and other techniques which help with symptoms following trauma, although I also work with more general emotional and behavioural issues which get in the way of everyday life and leading the life you want to lead. My Associates work with a wide range of issues and specialisms.

I know that it is hard to come for counselling. I believe, to work sensitively, safely, ethically and effectively, that we need to get to know each other so you can learn to trust me and I can adapt to you and your individuality. I draw on a variety of ways of exploring and helping with problems, in consultation with you, to suit you and the particular difficulties you face, whatever your personality, background, values and beliefs and sexual orientation. Research (and my own experience) tells me that an open and trusting relationship underpins successful therapy. This is what I aim to foster and your feedback about how therapy is going is very important to me. Finding the right person to work with is probably the most important thing for you, and if I am not right for you I should be able to help you find someone who is.

I love my work. I feel immense gratitude to the clients I have been privileged to work with, who have trusted me with their inner fears , doubts and troubled experiences and taught me so much.

Other stuff you might like to know:
I used to head a university department which trained counsellors - I am very proud to have helped facilitate the development of many excellent counsellors during 16 years at the university. My first book, Counselling Skills for Dummies, was published in September 2007.

My earlier background was in therapeutic social work with children and families. I also worked for Relate for over 20 years, with SAIL (Sexual Abuse and Incest Line, Chesterfield) for 7 years and the university student counselling service for 18 months.

I co-own Cornerstone Counselling and Therapy Centre where our Associates work with a wide variety of individual, couple and family issues, with adults and children. All of the therapists are vetted and are trained and experienced.

See the Cornerstone website www.cornerstone-sheffield.co.uk for more about me, the Cornerstone Associates and the Cornerstone philosophy.
