Steve is a breath of fresh air. He listens. He is kind and understanding. Gill (client)
Hello and welcome!
I am very aware that reading this is already a big step for you and that it probably follows a period of some uncertainty. Whatever it is that has led you to this directory and my profile, there is a good chance that I can offer you help and support.
I practice counselling because I fervently believe that it is able to improve the quality of people's lives, and it is something I have worked hard to develop effective skills in.
I have many years' experience, not just as a counsellor, but also previously as a community mental health worker in the voluntary and public sectors. I, therefore, have extensive knowledge and understanding of psychological and emotional issues of all kinds.
There is a growing body of research to indicate that the most important factor in achieving a positive outcome in counselling is not the type of therapy used but, simply, the quality of the relationship between the therapist and the client. Building a mutually trusting and respectful relationship with those I work with is, therefore, of paramount importance.
Though I initially trained as a Person-Centred therapist, I now find myself moving beyond the limitations of that term to offer a more Integrative (eclectic) approach, in tune with what seems most appropriate for each client. The ultimate aim is for each individual to feel free enough to express who they are and explore what they would like to become.
My way of working, therefore, incoporates elements from a number of different models, including Person-Centred, CBT, Psychodynamic, Humanistic, Gestalt
My counselling approach embraces openness, respect and understanding. It focuses on a person's humanity and gives them the chance to talk, absolutely confidentially, without being judged, about whatever it is that they are struggling with in their life.
I have devoted many years to a personal study of human behaviour, with a special interest in Psychology, Consciousness, Philosophy, and many different spiritual teachings, which form the basis of many of the modern developments within counselling and psychotherapy. The currently popular practice of Mindfulness, for example, is an ancient discipline borrowed from Buddhism.
"I had tried a couple of different counsellors but did not have a good experience, but from my first meeting with Steve I knew I had at last found someone I could relate to. I have always found Steve to be approachable, friendly, and extremely professional.
"I would highly recommend Steve to anyone thinking of having some counselling. Take that first step, it will be worth it."Julie
"If you are looking for someone to listen, also to give you space and time to work through your thoughts and emotions, then Steve is a wonderful guide. I found him to be a caring and understanding person during some dark days for myself. I now feel in a calmer and happier place." Johnnie
"I feel like a completely different person to when I first met Steve and his influence on my recovery cannot be underestimated. I would recommend Steve to anyone who feels like they could use some guidance to rediscover the path that can lead them to a happier future." Chris
"Steve is a breath of fresh air. He listens. He is kind and understanding. After talking through a relationship problem with him, I felt stronger and more confident to deal with it and move forward in a more positive way." Gill
"There is a unique sense of tranquillity and absolute understanding which flows from him. This is the reason why I believe Steve is outstanding at his job and why I have recommended him to friends and family since." Annie
