I have many years experience working with both men and women at all ages and stages of life who are experiencing a range of challenges including anxiety, depression and grief. I offer you a welcoming a reassuring space to talk about your concerns in privacy and total confidence. I will listen carefully to you in order to get an understanding of your experience. You will be accepted for who you are and I will not judge you. I provide a quiet tranquil space where you can reflect more fully and mindfully on your thoughts, feelings, actions and relationships as a first step in determing a way forward that gives you greater wellbing.
Counselling is a unique opportunity for personal growth and learning as well as a safe and confidential means of speaking about and working through your personal and relationship issues. You may have been feeling like this for some time or you may have noticed only recently that things do not feel ok. You may be experiencing symptoms such as depression, grief, rage, anxiety, panic, stress, confusion, low self esteem or feelings of worthlessness or hopeleness or powerlessness. Counselling can help with all of these as well as concerns about identity and meaning.
A Relational Approach
I describe my approach as person-centred and experiential because how we work together is pivotal to the effectiveness of the counselling process. I work with you in an equal way and remain mindful that each one of us is the true expert on our own experience. As fellow human beings we all face the inevitability of change, disruption and loss in our lives, along with the discomfort of not having or knowing all the answers.
As a regsitered bacp practitioner I respond to you flexibly and intuitively and draw upon a range of recognised counselling approaches including person-centred, existential, cognitive-behavioural, gestalt and transactional analysis. These embrace the whole of human experience - the physical, psychological, emotional, behavioural, social, cultural and spiritual aspects - all of which have an impact on our general well being and resilience.
A Flexible Format
I can work with you on a short or long term basis. You may find that a few sessions bring huge relief or you may choose to come regularly over a longer period. You are free to proceed on a session by session basis at intervals that work best for you. Counselling is an "evolving process" so you may find that your requirements change as the sessions proceed.
Whilst sessions are typically a full 60 minute hour I also offer shorter or longer sessions if required.
The first meeting gives you an opportunity to get a feel for how I work.
So what can you expect ?
We are all shaped by our past experience so gaining an insight into how your history and background has impacted you may be a helpful step in understanding how you are today. Many of your life experiences, whether recent or historical, may have affected your thoughts, feelings, behaviour and relationships. Distressing or difficult past events may still be impacting you in some way - often on a subconscious level - if they are not recognised or worked through.
You may prefer to focus specifically on how to do things differently in your life today without delving into your past. This work is often shorter term and more goal-oriented and technique based.
You may only know what you really want to talk about when you have attended a few sessions. This is quite normal.
