About me

You may not know which therapy you need, if you know you want help, please contact me ?

Independent, confidential assessments, consultations and therapy uniquely about you, for you, and at times made convenient to suit your availability. In Sheffield, I would like to welcome you and provide space for your exploration and if desired, an action plan of how to improve your situation. My premises are professionally and sensitively designed for your comfort, ease and privacy within a garden setting.

Since 1997, I have been employed as a counsellor, psychotherapist and manager in the NHS and at the Women's Counselling and Therapy Service, Leeds and other voluntary sector organisations.

My varied experience has been developed at The Maudsley Hospital, also St. George's London, in inpatient and outpatient settings, community family work, and in child and adolescent mental health clinics. For ten years, I held the position of senior staff counsellor for NHS employees in a large Mental Health Trust In South Yorkshire. This is highly relevant for NHS and EAP staff particularly for work placed stress concerns and personal and private issues.

EMDR therapy, CBT and extensive training in the psychological and physical effects of traumatic stress, anxiety and depression enables me to provide research based professional help. I have a background in the creative arts, embodied relational therapy, yoga qualified teacher and holistic massage therapist. I can also provide clinical hypnotherapy and master practitioner NLP coaching.

Originally used as an effective therapy for the relief of traumatic thoughts, intrusive images, feelings and sensations from recent or long since past experience(s), EMDR is a sophisticated and powerful therapeutic resource, which in my experience requires a mature, confident and highly skilled practitioner.

If you or someone you know is in crisis now, or perhaps depressed/anxious/fearful having experienced or witnessed something disturbing, please do make contact and we can talk about how I can be of help.

I am familiar and skilled assisting with work or personal difficulties which may be preventing you from achieving a satisfying balance of work and personal life. Many people in high status and public profile positions have used sessions to re-evaluate and re-energise matching their values and behaviour to achieve satisfaction and more periods of contentment. If you are indifferent, pre-occupied, frequently frustrated and disappointed and not knowing why life seems so flat, then you are in need of a re-think ! Mindfulness is integral to my work and strategies for coping can be learned without sitting cross legged!

I offer creative ways of identifying what it is that supports you effectively, and gradually strengthens your ability to cope and thrive. sessions can be interesting, stimulating, challenging and often relaxing. Sometimes you may even find it fun !

It may be a recent situation or something from your far distant past that you want to receive skilled and expert attention for to make the changes you know you want to make. I am flexible and open to making arrangements which give you the best attention. Nothing is too small and insignificant to talk about or too overwhelming to consider.

Training, qualifications & experience

Now 56 years old, I started out as a Nursery Nurse (NNEB), became a qualified teacher/lecturer for 10 years (BEd), studied Creative Arts in Education (MEd), and trained in Dance Movement Therapy in USA.
After qualification as a psychotherapist trained at WPF in psychodynamic theory, I began my employment in the NHS as a child and adolescent mental health practitioner in Wakefield. A relocation to London created the opportunity of studying 1yr at The Women's Therapy Centre, Manor Gardens with Susie Orbach as one of the many prestigious trainers. Employment in the South London and Maudsley NHS Trust involved families and children in community settings including schools and GP surgeries.

A position at St.George's hospital in Tooting as psychotherapist in an eating disorders unit for children and teenagers required multi disciplinary working in family therapy teams and individual sessions with long term patients. Also, independent consultation therapy work at the Priory Clinic group, North London.
I set up my own private practice in the evenings, and invested in training as a master practitioner of Neuro Linguistic Programming, a dual qualification enabling me to work within sports, for amateur and elite athletes , artistic performers and for application in business and coaching contexts. Referrals and requests from physiotherapists, HR depts, solicitors, commercial companies and individuals continue to be part of my Independent Practice. Based in Sheffield, NLP for student study skills, exam pressure and interview performance is popular.

Returning to Yorkshire, I became a senior staff counsellor in a large Mental Health NHS Trust for ten years. I trained in clinical hypnotherapy and then EMDR with Gerry Puk and John Spector utilising this with doctors and psychiatrists, RMN nurses and first responders at accidents. The Adaptive Information Processing Model (EMDR) is highly useful for anyone, including professionals who have experienced or witnessed disturbing and distressing events which have had significant stressful or traumatic consequences In work or civilian life.

With agreement , for interested clients I teach yoga exercises or asanas, for anxiety , depression, and pain. Reiki at the end of sessions often induces a deep calm and is restorative.

Embodied Relational Therapy training ( 1yr ) and clinical supervision with Nick Totton ( 8yrs) has supported my continuing professional development as an holistic and integrative therapist. This may be relevant for people who know they have been victims and survivors of sexual abuse, rape, violence or neglect.

Also helpful for those with body dysmorphia, eating distress, survivors of accidents and surgical trauma or disturbing child birth experience is holistic massage therapy and sensorimotor therapy.

I continue to use Dance Movement Therapy and can offer this for recreational interest, or therapy and continued professional development of practitioners. My current research into good practice is utilising trauma sensitive yoga. Groups are starting for TSY in 2017 after I return from a training sabbatical in India (October 25-December 16 )

Other areas of counselling I deal with

I am interested in the therapeutic use of touch. My professional training in holistic massage therapy (MTI validated) and in Thai Yoga Massage therapy trained by Katrin Heuser 2016 is an optional aspect of healing and recovery or adaptation for clients after discussion and collaboration.
