Some thoughts on outdoor therapy…, published on 2nd April, 2019

Deciding to come to counselling is definitely the first step. It can be a tough decision though, including finding the right therapist for you! Remember that working with an experienced therapist will probably require less sessions than with someone less experienced. I have over sixteen years of post-qualification experience. Here are some testimonials from people I have worked with:

‘I have felt completely at ease to open up. I have cried, laughed and everything in between and I couldn’t recommend Mandy highly enough.’ – January 2022

'I was sceptical about counselling..... but you have been an amazing support and have changed my outlook on life... arming me with the skills to go forward. I really appreciate how you have rebuilt me and re-established my resilience....I'm ready for the world again now.. thank you so much '  October 2020

' I can live and grow round past events rather than wanting to remove them. Having Mandy to listen, talk with and help navigate my feelings and perceptions was invaluable, the result was increased self esteem and a general feeling that it's going to be better than OK! I would definitely recommend. Thanks Mandy.' August 2020

I offer walking therapy. Being in nature can offer a different way to connect with ourselves and the therapist. For many people, this can feel less intimidating than sitting in a small space together. It can feel freer and more co-operative, two people moving and exploring current difficulties in a natural environment. Working outdoors might involve walking, exploring an area or sitting in one place.

I can help you with:

  • anxiety, generalised anxiety disorder and panic attacks
  • depression, low mood, feeling sad, lack of motivation
  • low self-esteem and low confidence
  • social anxiety
  • heightened stress, feeling overloaded and overwhelmed
  • work stress, performance anxiety, redundancy, retirement
  • relationship issues, including separation and divorce
  • health issues including menopause
  • loss or bereavement
  • family issues including with children and their education
  • past issues that repeatedly return and affect how you feel

You may feel sad, burdened, and lacking in energy. This is the time to get some support for yourself. I can help you to figure out what needs to change.

Training, qualifications & experience

I qualified as a Counsellor in 2007 (BTEC Professional Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling) and have a Degree (BA Honours) in Sociology and Psychology from the University of Leicester.

In 2018 I completed a Certificate in Environmentally Based Therapy which involved 15 days training in therapeutic work outdoors plus 100 hours online study time.

I have additional training in other models including Transactional Analysis and CBT.

I have worked independently as a counsellor since 2010.

I have 16 years of qualified experience in a variety of settings. These include :

  • An NHS Service offering brief therapy for depression, anxiety and other issues
  • for employees focusing on work-related issues
  • education – working with children and families in schools
  • bereavement services
  • sexual abuse/violence services
  • women's centre
  • GP practice - primary care mental health service
  • university student/staff counselling service
  • independent service for military families

I previously worked in mental health services for ten years, including: working with young people on a rehabilitation ward in a private psychiatric hospital; in residential community support for people with severe and enduring mental health problems and as a mental health advocate for Craven Advocacy.

I offer confidential counselling and work to the guidelines of the Ethical Framework for Good Practice in Counselling and Psychotherapy. I access counselling supervision in line with BACP guidelines via an external supervisor; your identity will be kept in confidence.

Member organisations

Registered / Accredited

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
