About me

I am Mairi Gillies and I've been working as a psychological therapist / counsellor for over 20 years. I worked in the mental health field for 12 years in the Priory Hospital Glasgow as a senior therapist / counsellor working with clients experiencing depression, stress and anxiety-related problems and also specialised in the eating disorders programme for a period of 2 years. I also provided the therapy service to Central Scotland Police /  Police Scotland for 11 years and continue to work with the Scottish Fire and Rescue service working with a range of issues from personal problems to traumatic incidents.

I completed my training in 2001 and am Accredited with the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists. I undertake a minimum of 30 hours CPD per year and receive monthly supervision.

I set up private practice in 2009 in attractive premises in a central and easily accessed location. I work predominantly with stress-related issues, mood and depression, anxiety disorders, trauma, relationship difficulties, obsessive traits, bereavement, eating disorders, anger management, assertiveness training, low self esteem and confidence issues.

The counselling sessions are interactive and adapted to individual need and presentation. I work in an integrative manner using CBT tools where applicable to accompany dialogue and help address negative and irrational thought patterns. My aim to make the sessions as relaxed and helpful as possible and having a wide range of experience of different problems is an advantage. The goal is always to improve what has been a difficult situation and to ultimately help provide either effective coping strategies or to make comprehensive changes to the problem. Dealing with the areas which are causing stress and distress is more personally rewarding than ignoring the problem that perhaps is just not going away.Talking therapies have been highly endorsed to help alleviate personal distress or difficulty, and with the right help this can be achieved.

Please do get in touch if you would like more information and I'd be more than happy to arrange an appointment. I also offer a no-charge 30 min introductory session if you would prefer, which offers an opportunity to discuss the potential of counselling.

I am also Registered with BUPA and AVIVA Insurance Companies.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
