I have worked as a counsellor and supervisor in independent practice for over twenty years. Previously I worked concurrently for twelve years in NHS settings counselling, supervising and leading a team of primary care counsellors.. I have a training background and I have worked on counsellor and supervisor training courses as wells as offering focussed workshops and seminars. I currently work for several EAP providers who offer short-term funded counselling to employees. I am a BUPA registered practitioner.
My core psychodynamic approach means that I am committed to relate to clients as a whole person in the context of their lives. Clients may choose counselling for help with current difficulties with relationship issues, work problems and feelings of overwhelming anxiety, depression, negative thought patterns, low mood or lack of self-esteem. My experience and training as a Yoga teacher enables me to offer techniques for relaxation, mindfulness and stress management.
I offer both short and longer term contracts to clients depending on their needs and the issues that bring them to counselling. I believe that clients benefit from understanding how perceptions of problems influence our thoughts, feelings and behaviour
Short focussed counselling is helpful to address and manage specific problems, recent loss or life events and relationship crises. Our curent climate of uncertainty brings issues over employment insecurity or redundancy .
Longer term counselling offers an opportunity for more in-depth exploring of life stage issues, and for finding ways of managing problems of recurrent anxiety, stress, depression or low mood to improve relationships with others and self-esteem. Clients may wish to understand more fully the impact from past or family relationships to increase awareness about repeated patterns of negative thinking or behaviour in current situations or relationships.
Overall, I offer empathy within the counselling relationship, aiming to enable and encourage clients to strengthen their own resources and begin to find ways to make the changes they are seeking.
