Christopher J. Coulson, UKCP. Positive, growth-oriented approach.

The most important factor in counselling success is the rapport or resonance that exists between the clients and the counsellor. I therefore offer prospective clients a no-charge interview to help them decide if they want to work with me.
My services include counselling, psychotherapy and a unique form of depth life-coaching that I offer to individuals and couples, both in person and over the telephone. I also provide clinical supervision to other practitioners.
I have been in private practice for nearly 30 years, working and testing my approach in both the USA and the UK. I now practice in Westbourne, convenient for Poole, Christchurch and the rest of Bournemouth.
I say rather more about this on my website, but I 'discovered' counselling and psychotherapy by seeking help for myself as a client. So I know how finding the right counsellor or psychotherapist can literally transform your life.
This is why I urge everyone to take their search for a counsellor or therapist very seriously. It also means that my approach is very much rooted in the client experience, giving added weight to your needs and meanings.
If you are not clear whether you want psychotherapy, counselling or life coaching I suggest you use part of your free interview session to help you decide.
Training, qualifications & experience
I am registered as an Independent Counsellor with the BACP-administered United Kingdom Register of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (UKRCP) and as a Psychotherapist and Group Psychotherapist with the United Kingdom Council on Psychotherapy (UKCP).
I am a Professional Member of both the International Association of Marriage and Family Counsellors and of the American Counseling Association.
I am accredited in the UK and was for many years a Board Member of the UKAHPP. I served as Ethics Officer, UKCP Delegate and for seven years as General Secretary.
I trained at a private Psychotherapy Institute in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA.
The training offered a unique combination of approach by embedding psycho-analytic understanding and rigour in a humanistic-existential frame. I trained as a couples counsellor, an individual and group psychotherapist and as a clinical supervisor. This training was in the classic psycho-analytic tradition and required constant and genuine experience as a client in whatever mode one wished to practice. It took 14 years to complete.
Later, I trained as a life coach with the Colorado-based Institute for Life Coach Training. This is an institute specialising in training therapists and counsellors to use their skills in a coaching direction.
I have since developed my own form of life coaching to meet the needs of those individuals who find standard offerings insufficient for their level of competence and success.
Broadly, I have reached the point of experience where multiple theories and types of therapy have become blended with my own experience and thought processes. I have ticked many of the 'therapy type' boxes below and a therapy-knowledgable client will recognise aspects of all these as they talk with me.

I am a determined generalist. Nevertheless, over the years it has become clear that certain client groups work particularly successfully with me.
They include: gifted, talented and creative individuals; the eating disordered; those interested in non-traditional sexual activities; the newly successful and wealthy; entrepreneurs and what I call "the questioning professional" - the person who follows a typical professional life but whose thoughts and aspirations do not conform to those of his or her peers.
My thoughts on life as a gifted adult can be found at www.thegiftedway.com.
