About me

Hello and Welcome to my entry.

I am a Professional Therapist, based in Bowdon offering counselling and psychotherapy services in South Manchester covering the Wilmslow, Altrincham, Knutsford and Cheshire areas.

What do I offer?

  • I am a fully trained and experienced counsellor and psychotherapist and an Accredited member of The British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy. I am also a registered member of The Professional Standards Authority for health professionals. I am BUPA Registered. I am a subscribing member of UKATA.
  • I work within a caring, supportive and challenging relationship to form a trusting, explorative and collaborative therapeutic experience.

It is part of living that we have problems day to day in our relationships with our family, friends or those we work with. When these difficult experiences lead to anxiety or depression, relationship breakdown, obsessive ‘what if’ thinking, panic or traumatic memories from the past, then I can help you.

What can you expect?

  • I will help in identifying your current problems and how they affect your life and well being.
  • You can find out what is behind the depression, anxiety or other emotional or behavioural difficulty that you experience and make links to your earlier life and relationships.
  • Understanding how you learned to live through sometimes intense and unmanageable feelings by relating to others and yourself in particular ways.
  • Identifying how these patterns may be holding you back, you can explore and change old, unhelpful ways of doing and being.
  • Discovering the choices that are available to you to make your life better for yourself and those close to you.

Therapy facilitates change, enabling you to live fully in the present with energy and creativity. I can help you to embrace who you are with all your strengths and limitations and improve your life.

'There are things known, and there are things unknown...and in between are the doors'.

Training, qualifications & experience

Fiona Brewin B.Sc Hons Reg MBACP(Accred) Dip Transactional Analysis Counselling and Psychotherapy UKATA

Before I trained as a psychotherapist I worked successfully in Retail Management and then for many years in Marketing in the Manufacturing sector, researching new products and bringing them to market. I experienced all the difficulties of a fast paced career with the added demands of my partner and family and indeed seemed to thrive on being independent and achieving. I used all my coping strategies to deal with the stresses that this life placed on me coupled with an unsupportive and difficult relationship. Over time I found that I was anxious, stressed and not feeling OK and undertook my own journey of therapy which gave me insight into why I behave, think and feel with different people and provided me with a non judgmental space to explore different ways of being and doing that enriched my experience in relationship and increased my self confidence.

I am now a fully qualified, BACP accredited and experienced counsellor and psychotherapist working in private practice at Signature Therapy, Bowdon with adults and couples. I have also worked as a counsellor at a busy counselling and family centre in Altrincham where I worked with individuals and groups.

I have been influenced by Transactional Analysis. TA begins with a very simple philosophy ......that people can change and that change is possible.

Transactional Analysis is a popular and easily understood theory of personality and self development. It is widely used in business and organisations and is a useful tool for exploring ourselves when used collaboratively in counselling with individuals and couples.

TA helps you to understand how you function and how you express your personality in terms of the way you think, feel and behave. The way you relate to others becomes clearer and your relationships will improve as you grow and change.

With more insight into your problems you can discover how previous life decisions and choices may have limited you. I will help you find new ways of feeling, thinking and behaving so that you can change some of those self-limiting decisions about yourself, others and life in general.

I have also had training in working with individuals that have suffered trauma and are experiencing depression, flashbacks, nightmares and panic. Additionally I have worked with adults who have experienced sexual, physical and emotional trauma and abuse either in their childhood or in abusive relationships.

I do not provide medical or psychiatric diagnosis or opinion. If I think that psychotherapy is not effectively helping you then I will refer you to your G.P. and NHS psychotherapeutic services.

I am an accredited member of BACP and abide by their code of ethics and conduct and receive regular clinical supervision for my work as a counsellor and psychotherapist. You can find me on the members BACP therapist directory http://www.itsgoodtotalk.org.uk/.

Member organisations

Registered / Accredited

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

Other areas of counselling I deal with

Trauma Recovery

I am trained in the psychophysiology of trauma and trauma recovery. Trauma recovery is fraught with difficulty and it is very important that I work with you so that you feel safe during the session and so do not re-traumatize you.

Post traumatic stress can develop from a single life threatening event like being involved in a train crash or can arise from the developmental impact on you of childhood sexual, physical and emotional abuse. Many children who have been impacted by this type of developmental trauma and survived into adulthood now suffer from extreme anxiety, flashbacks and nightmares, depression and numbness and may cope by dissociation, or self harming in some form including alcohol and substance abuse.

It is my job to manage the session and ‘to put the brakes on’ in order that you are not overwhelmed and hyper aroused with fear, but that we develop protocols together to manage the anxiety produced by triggers and not re-traumatise you.

Fees

£60.00 - £65.00

Additional information

When we meet I will listen to your difficulties and talk with you about what you want to achieve from your therapy, but most importantly the first meeting is about you and your choice of therapist. It is important that you feel comfortable and can imagine building a trusting and authentic relationship as we get to know each other over time. This first session will go a long way towards this and will give you a good sense as to what a session feels like and how it is different from any other conversational experience. You will have questions about confidentiality, fees and what happens if you have to cancel that I will be happy to answer plus anything else about your expectations of the therapeutic process.

I do not provide medical or psychiatric diagnosis or opinion. If I think that psychotherapy is not effectively helping you then I will refer you to your G.P. and NHS psychotherapeutic services.

All work between us is by your consent, confidential and appropriate to your needs.

Sessions cost £60 for 60 minutes for an individual or £65 for a couple.
