Feeling stuck in old patterns? Needing a space to explore something in the past or present which is affecting you now? I am a professionally qualified counsellor with over eighteen years experience working with individuals from a wide variety of backgrounds.
Many people find it helpful to talk to a counsellor who is outside of their network of family or friends, where they can explore - in a confidential and relaxed setting - difficult issues with someone who is professionally trained to work in this way.
I have worked with people to address a wide range of issues, for example:
- a crisis or a particular problem eg bereavement, loss, stress, depression, anxiety or work-related issues
- difficulties in how well we feel we are connecting with others, whether partners, family or colleagues. This can undermine our confidence, or give rise to feelings of isolation or low self-esteem or confidence
- wanting to explore long standing issues, or why unhelpful patterns seem to repeat, or similar issues reoccur in your life
- To deal with something from the past (or present), such as trauma or abuse – which still affects your adult life
I will support you to explore difficult feelings, thoughts and/or behaviours you may be experiencing, to help deepen your self-understanding, raise awareness and identify ways of working towards healthy change.
I offer an initial session at a reduced fee, which provides an opportunity for us to talk about what has prompted you to come, and for you to get a sense of how I might work with you. Following this, if we decide to work together, we would usually agree to meet for a number of sessions with a review to see how things are going. I offer short or longer term counselling depending on what you want to achieve and what kind of difficulties you are facing.
My approach to therapy is humanistic and integrative; I draw upon different models of therapy (for example, psychodynamic, gestalt, cognitive behavioural and existential models), integrating ways of working which I believe will be helpful for you. I am flexible and creative in my approach, and aim to work collaboratively so that you feel comfortable and in control of what you talk about.
I work from my practice in Westbury Park (BS6) which is tranquil and private, with easy access to bus routes and unrestricted street parking.
I work with individuals - young people and adults and also provide supervision for other therapists.
I am a member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), and work to their Ethical Framework for Good Practice in Counselling and Psychotherapy. All my work is professionally supervised.
Training, qualifications & experience
Along with my private practice I have experience of working as a counsellor in a variety of organisational settings over the last eighteen years – initially working in youth counselling organisations in the voluntary sector, and university student counselling services in Bristol. Subsequently I have worked for Mind, the YWCA, the South West Adoption Network (SWAN), and Platform 51 counselling young people. Currently I supervise Bereavement Support Workers for Cruse Bereavement Care, in addition to my private practice.
