Miriam James, MBACP (Snr. Accred) Counsellor & Supervisor; EMDR Practitioner
I believe that talking to someone who accepts you as you are and doesn't seek to change or judge you can greatly assist in understanding and resolving fears and painful feelings.
I aim to offer you that acceptance and understanding. As a very experienced counsellor, I work in a number of different areas, (as you can read further down on my profle). To me, it's vital that you feel comfortable and can trust me as your counsellor. To this end, if you wish to talk to me in advance of making an appointment, do contact me by phone or by email. I will be extremely happy to discuss how I work and answer any questions you have.
Regarding my experience, all of my working life, I have had people-facing roles. Previously, I worked in human resources in global organisations and also in a large public sector organisation, where I was responsible for the welfare and progress of third world students in the UK. Since 1990 I have worked in my own consultancy, as a therapist, a supervisor, a trainer and career coach. Beforehand, I worked in West Africa as a volunteer for 2 years and more recently for 18 years, I was an associate senior coach in a premier career coaching firm.
My counselling training
In 1997 I started training to become a counsellor, achieving a long-held ambition. Since completing that training 3 years later, I decided to train to become a counselling supervisor. I love working as both a therapist and as a supervisor.
What I offer you
My work includes counselling, supervising and career coaching. I offer short term and open ended counselling to couples, individuals and small groups. I work in my counselling room in central Maidenhead and also offer telephone counselling sessions.
Areas in which I work as a counsellor include: relationship issues, couples counselling, anxiety, depression, postnatal depression, panic attacks, trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder, bereavement and loss, welfare & health issues, abuse, low self-esteem and self-confidence, stress, bullying, assertiveness, dementia and anger management.
When working as a career coach, the following topics occur often, but they are not an exhaustive list: workplace issues, career change, portfolio careers, redundancy and job loss, low self-esteem and low self-confidence, assertiveness, CV writing, interview skills, making effective presentations and coping with stress.
I'm aware that arranging a first meeting with a counsellor can make you feel nervous. In recognising this, I try hard to make you feel welcome and at ease, so that you're able to talk openly and feel really heard.
