To embark on counselling is to enter a deeply personal and therapeutic relationship with someone who can help you find your way to live your life effectively and cope with the various problems that are an inevitable part of life.
I often liken counselling to having someone walk with you awhile during a difficult part of your life.
Counselling can help with a variety of problems you may be experiencing such as: relieving stress; work-related issues; depression; issues arising from your childhood; abuse; family and relationship problems.
Furthermore, counselling provides you with the time and space to explore aspects of yourself or your life that you are not happy with. It can be invaluable in helping you determine what you would like from life, exploring who you really are and helping you take the action you need to change your life.
The type of counselling I offer aims to empower the individual so that they can work through their problems themselves. It facilitates and nurtures the inherent healing ability in us all.
I provide an individual with a safe environment and therapeutic relationship that is conducive to helping them do this. Part of this is through accepting and valuing the individual for who they are and without judgement. By being genuine and honest and through empathising with the individual to share understanding, I can help the client work through their problems, fears, anxieties, anger and so on. Such counselling can also offer a different perspective to your situation through unprejudiced reflection. This helps particularly when you 'can't see the wood for the trees'. Counselling can help you see more clearly.
Counselling is not about giving advice and does not offer a miracle cure. There is no analysis or diagnosis. It is purely an opportunity for you to have someone who can listen and reflect, help you shed light on your problems and it has the potential to elicit positive changes in you and subsequently your life.
The counselling process can be quite hard and challenging at times - but through such times comes insight and transformation. Not an easy task but one that many have found worthwhile.
