Profile
Former clients have described me as warm and understanding. Everyone is unique and cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) is individually tailored to your needs. After months of being fully booked, I have a couple of spaces becoming available. Please feel free to read through this page or to click on the link above to my go through to my new website.
In any situation, how we think (cognitive) influences how we feel and what we do (behaviour) in response. When we experience distress, examining our thoughts and behaviour can help us feel better. Unlike other therapies, CBT focuses mostly on the present to change how you respond to and manage problems now and in the future. If it is part of the problem, we examine what you have learned in the past, ask if it is still true and helpful, and if not, help you develop new ways of thinking and behaving which are more realistic and help you feel better.
CBT is an evidence-based psychological therapy which means it is shown to work. For anxiety problems, depression and eating disorders, the National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) for the Department of Health recommend it as the treatment of choice based on research findings. This has led to long waiting lists in the NHS (currently approximately 10 months for one to one treatment in Oxford). As far as possible, I offer CBT as it was developed in the research trials which have shown its effectiveness.
It is short term in comparison to other therapies and teaches you to be your own therapist with the goal of you not needing to seek further therapy if difficulties arise again. This means it is one of the most cost-effective therapies in the long-term. Improvement is related to what you do between the sessions, in trying out what works for you in your daily life, which means you are in control. CBT is open and collaborative, and you will always know what skills we are using and why.
I offer CBT treatment for anxiety problems (including worry, social anxieties, phobias and panic), depression or low mood and perfectionism. I also offer behavioral activation (based on behaviour therapy) as an alternative treatment for depression, which has been shown to be as effective as CBT.
I am one of a few therapists in the UK who offer the leading evidence-based treatment, CBT-E (Cognitive Behaviour Therapy-Enhanced) recommended by NICE for eating disorders. I use this in its pure form and am supervised by the researchers at Oxford University who spent 25 years developing the treatment. I offer CBT-E for clients over the age of 16 years old. Standard CBT-E treatment is only 20 sessions long. A former client recently said at one year follow up "Things are going so well thank you, I feel like a completely different person, completely like the real me again and everyone is commenting on how happy I seem. Thank you so much for everything you've done for me, you've completely changed my life."
I understand the importance of finding the right therapist and that this is a personal decision. Therefore, our first meeting is not binding on either side and is your opportunity to decide if I am the therapist you wish to work with. The first step is to ring me for an informal chat about your requirements and, if appropriate, arrange for an assessment. From this we will develop a better understanding of what is keeping the problems going and whether CBT can help. (For assessment and session prices, please see further down this page).
