About me

Life getting on top of you?
Trying to move on from trauma or sexual abuse?
Would you like space to explore your thoughts and feelings?

Counselling and psychotherapy can help. My name is Sarah Layzell and I've been working in private practice since 1997. My approach is integrative and person-centred, drawing on existential and mindfulness-based approaches as well as attachment theory . I am committed to providing counselling and psychotherapy in a safe, confidential and non-judgemental environment. I am accredited by the BACP and adhere to their Ethical Framework.

I work with individuals and couples; with young people (over 18), adults and older adults.

I see people - individuals and couples - with all sorts of problems, as well as those whose goal is to explore their lives further. I am especially interested in helping people with relationship problems, depression, stress & anxiety, chronic illness, difficulties with food and the aftermath of rape & sexual abuse.

I have additional training in online and telephone counselling and have used these media for many years.

I have a Diploma in Supervision from CSTD in Bath and offer supervision on a one-to-one basis.

Training, qualifications & experience

I qualified in 1997 with a Diploma in Existential Psychotherapy & Counselling from Regent's College London and in 2017 gained a Diploma in Supervision from CSTD Bath. I have a MSc. in the Sociology of Health & Illness (University of London, 1990) and before becoming a full-time therapist worked in research, specialising in mental health and disability.

My first counselling job was with Diabetes UK, helping people come to terms with their diagnosis and the changes and losses this involved. For 3 years I worked for Kinergy, providing counselling for men and women who had been raped or sexually abused, so have particular experience in this area. I worked part-time in the Student Counselling Services at UWE and the University of Bath for over 10 years and have a strong interest in working with young people (over 18).

I continue my professional development by frequently undertaking additional training, most recently focusing on Mindfulness, attachment-based approaches and managing the aftermath of trauma & sexual abuse.

Member organisations

Registered / Accredited

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
