About me

I am a compassionate counsellor with over 24 years experience in private practice as a counsellor and 31 years as a holistic therapist.  I work long term but am happy to offer brief, low cost counselling when needed. I have a special interest in working with relationship issues, couples counselling, with terminally ill clients and their families, anxiety and bereavement. I work in a quiet Location, there is easy parking. If you use the bus service my clinic is just 10 minuets walk from the centre of Wallingford.

I firmly believe in the therapeutic relationship and believe the aim of counselling is to help you clarify and express your thoughts and feelings so that you can arrive at your own decisions and discover ways of living more resourcefully. Whether to undertake counselling or not, that is a personal choice. People deal with difficulties in their life in many different ways. Counselling is one method to help you through difficult times. We don't always want to talk to friends or family about issues.

It is a miss conception that one has to be in "Therapy" long term to make a difference. I believe that as little as one session can help people to move on depending on the issue.

The Person Centred counselling model is based on the understanding that you are the expert on you. I will walk with you on your journey but not analyse you, tell you what to do or tell you what is ‘wrong’ with you. The core beliefs of a Person Centered Counsellor are: congruence I will be honest with you, unconditional positive regard I will not judge you, I will accept you where you are and empathy- I will walk along side you, see the world through your eyes.

What to expect in the first session:
In the first session we will talk informally about your concerns. You are free to ask me about myself. it will give us both a chance to see if I can help you. If you feel I am the right counselor for you then we can discuss your goals and look at the best way forward. Each session lasts 50 minuets.

I can offer other tools alongside counselling with your permission.
Sometimes known as Energy Psychology

I use PMR:
When a patient is particularly stressed or anxious I will use PMR progressive muscle relaxation, this is a very simple tool to help you release the stress in your body.

Or Guided Visualization:

Sometimes we can be locked in problem behaviors this can make it difficult for therapeutic change to happen. Guided imagery and visualisation can help unlock emotions through deep relaxation. Reducing anxiety.

Or Mindfulness Meditation

Or Thought Field Therapy (Tapping) or EFT Emotional Freedom Technique:

What is TFT/EFT? Discovered by Dr Roger Callahan, a Californian Psychologist. TFT is a unique form of psychotherapy backed by over twenty-five years of research and development. TFT is the father of EFT. With TFT/EFT, real changes can usually be made in just six sessions. There is no need to go into great detail about the problem/trauma. TFT/EFT is sometimes described as “energy psychology” because a client seems to make quantum leaps forward in their treatment. TFT is particularly effective when working with PTSD or post traumatic stress disorder it works in the same way as EMDR.

What to expect:

The client simply thinks about their problem. There is no need to talk about a problem, making TFT/EFT the most useful therapy for victims of crime, assault, rape, verbal or sexual abuse, and childhood trauma.

Whilst the client thinks of their problem, I ask them to tap on specific points on the upper body and hands. TFT does not change a thought, but simply deactivates the negative response to that thought.

Nothing else changes; memories and learning’s remain the same Simple problems such as fears and phobias can often be removed in one treatment session, often in minutes, more complex problems, may take longer. TFT/EFT is a great tool for addiction making giving up smoking or eating to excess easy to deal with.

Case study:
A young mother came to me in a very distressed state; she suffered panic attacks in public places. This had got worse since the birth of her daughter. This young woman was distress because she felt she would never be able to do anything ‘normal’ with her child such as go to the park, take her to parties go shopping even. After just 2 sessions of TFT this young woman was a changed person. My client came for 4 more sessions to iron out old fears and really get on top of things. I am still amazed at the fast results of TFT.

I use Bach Flower Remedies.

What are Bach Flower Remedies? The Bach flower remedies are a gentle system of healing discovered in the 1930’s by Dr Edward Bach, a physician, bacteriologist, and homeopath. The remedies are produced using mother tinctures made from plants to Dr Bach’s instructions. The remedies are designed to treat the person not the disease. It seems that every one has heard of Rescue Remedy but did you know there are many more remedies in The Bach range that can help during the difficult times in our lives? My counselling and TFT skills are used along side the consultation if it is appropriate. This is holistic medicine its aim is to treat the whole person.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
