About me

Having previously worked in the NHS I now work solely on a private basis with individuals, couples and young people (not children). This will be on a short term basis, the length of time we work together being agreed with whoever I work with and in a way which fits best with your particular needs and situation. I have a firm belief in the value of safety, warmth, empathy, trust and respect as being fundamental to the effectiveness of therapy. I am primarily interested in enhancing your own understanding and your reflections on your difficulties as the means of getting in touch with your inner wisdom; I will seek to support you in this by responding as honestly and as thoughtfully as I can from an independent and experienced position. I will be committed to being alongside you in this process, which though it may prove painful and difficult, especially to begin with, is usually extremely rewarding.

Training, qualifications & experience

Qualified Psychotherapist (registered with UKCP)

Senior Accredited Counsellor (registered with BACP)

Post Grad.Diploma in Humanistic and Integrative Psychotherapy (BCPC Bath)

Post.Grad.Dip. in Humanistic Psychology.(Bath)

Relate Accreditation as Couple Counsellor and Group Worker.

Post-Grad.Dip. in Social Work (Sussex University) which included a certificate of recognition in Child Care, Mental Health and Probation.

Hons. Degree in Psychology (Sheffield University).

Latterly: Hons. Degree in Fine Art. (Bath Uni.)

I spent the earlier part of my working life as a social worker in inner London, in childcare and mental health, and in child and adult psychiatric services. Having then qualified as a therapist, I worked as a counsellor, counselling trainer, supervisor and group facilitator in both voluntary and statutory agencies; This included creating and developing low cost counselling services for children and young people and also separately, for adults.

Being increasingly concerned about the impact of parents separating on their children I worked for a while for the Family Conciliation Service to encourage and support parents in making decisions together about their children's custody and access arrangements, with the children's well-being as the primary objective.

Latterly my work as a psychotherapist, counsellor, trainer and supervisor has been in the N.H.S, and  counselling in GP surgeries, also as school counsellor (in both independent and public schools).
I now work on an entirely private basis offering supervision, seeing individuals, couples and young people on a short term basis.

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

UKCP
UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP)

The UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) is a leading professional body for the education, training and regulation of psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors. Its register is accredited by the government's Professional Standards Authority.

As part of its commitment to protect the public, it works to improve access to psychotherapy, to support and disseminate research, to improve standards and to respond effectively to complaints against its members.

UKCP standards cover the range of different psychotherapies. Registration is obtained by training or accrediting with one of its member organisations, or by holding a European Certificate in Psychotherapy. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.

Other areas of counselling I deal with

I enjoy working with artists on issues relating to their creativity; having trained as an artist myself I feel interested in and well suited to work of this kind;though not qualified as an art therapist I am happy to work with more visual and creative approaches, which can be particularly helpful if putting thoughts and feelings into words feels too difficult, or even impossible.

  • Low income

Additional information

My usual fees are currently £55 for individuals, and £65 for couples,
though I am sometimes able to offer low cost sessions for the unwaged, and people on low incomes/benefits, and front line carers and NHS workers, as I am particularly concerned about the social impact and the ill effects of inequality.

Please feel free to contact me to arrange an initial session so that we able to find out if I can be helpful to you and to see if we both feel we can work together well. If we conclude this does not seem the most helpful approach for you I may be able to direct you to a more suitable alternative.
