About me

I am a qualified, experienced and compassionate UKCP accredited Integrative Body Psychotherapist running a practice in the central Oxford and Witney areas.  I offer a confidential setting within which it is safe to share your unique life story, struggles and issues. The work is individually focused to enable you to explore your feelings and fears, as well as your hopes, aspirations and values.  I have 19 years experience exploring issues such as loss or bereavement, depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, panic-attacks, anger issues, relationship problems and stress management.

Somatic Trauma Work

I can also help you if you suffer from symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). I work using the three stages of trauma recovery as depicted in Babette Rothschild's 'The Body Remembers'.

In addition to working with trauma myself, I also organise and assist on Babette's 'Somatic Trauma Trainings' which she runs in London, training professionals to work with trauma and PTSD.

Babette Rothschild is one of the leading writers and trainers on working with Trauma and PTSD. Amongst her books are The Body Remembers; The Case Book and The Eight Keys series.

Supervision

I am also currently undertaking the CSTD (Centre for Supervision and Team Development) training in Supervision in Bath. To this end I would be happy to see supervisees at the reduced fee of £45 during my training period.

How I work

I use a relational, body-centred approach and therefore, at times, I use body work and/or breathing exercises to facilitate our work together. This can be a very powerful tool and enables me to address whatever you may be struggling with on all levels of your being; body, emotion, mind and spirit.  I recognise that many psychological problems have immediate correlations in the body: anxiety and panic attacks, sexual or eating problems, addictions, overwhelming feelings or depression and it is worth noting that non-verbal communication constitutes 93% of human interaction.  Thus if we can learn to listen to ourselves as a whole system then we are able to get much clearer information about what is going on and maybe how to begin addressing it.

My approach is also from a relational perspective, and I believe that the therapeutic encounter impacts on, and potentially changes, both participants. If this meeting is to be real, the therapist must bring their vulnerability and humility to the meeting as well as their experience and strength.

Some of the benefits of talking to me include-

  • Relieving symptoms of trauma and panic/anxiety attacks
  • Finding release from emotional and painful symptoms
  • Having more control and choice in your life
  • Learning to work more effectively with self-destructive patterns of behaviour
  • Improving or deepening relationships
  • Changing old ways of coping that haven’t worked
  • Gaining deeper understanding of behaviours and feelings
  • Feeling more pleasure and vitality
  • Achieving a deeper sense of connection with your body

Training, qualifications & experience

I completed my training at the Chiron Centre for Integrative Body Psychotherapy in 1998.  Chiron is a United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) accredited training, which has developed various body-centred approaches from Willhelm Reich's work on muscle armouring to Gerda Boysen's work on Biodynamic massage.

The name Chiron has become associated with an integrative and relational approach to body psychotherapy in the UK. The centaur Chiron symbolises our engagement with the interactive processes between psychological, bodily and transpersonal dimensions which contribute to the organisation of the whole person. The image of the 'wounded healer' associated with the centaur also serves as a reminder of the participative nature of the psychotherapist's role in the therapeutic relationship.

I am a member of CABP, which is a practitioner-centred association led by its elected members and dedicated to developing and advancing the art, science, and practice of Body Psychotherapy. Founded initially as the "Association of Chiron Psychotherapists" (AChP) in 1988 to support practitioners trained at the Chiron Centre for Body Psychotherapy in London, the organisation expanded to accommodate psychotherapists from other body psychotherapy approaches as well.

I am also UKCP accredited and abide by it's code of ethics.

I have been working for nearly 19 years running a private practice both in London and Oxford.  I am currently expanding my practice to the Witney area.

I worked at the Psychosynthesis & Education Trust for several years until recently and ran their Counselling Service for 6 years, which included assessing and referring clients to my team of trained and qualified counsellors and psychotherapists, along with running a low cost placement scheme for students training at the Trust and clients on lower incomes.

I have undertaken trainings in Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) from a body-oriented perspective and also Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) with Soul and incorporate these into my general work. I currently run and assist on Babette's 'Somatic Trauma Trainings' which she runs in London, training professionals to work with trauma and PTSD.
