Profile
I offer a service in psychotherapy and counselling for both short and long term work. You probably won't know at the outset how long you need and what the work will be about. The only thing you may be certain of is "I want things to change."
Very often, when a person first makes contact with a therapist or counsellor, they have already been thinking about it for a long time. It's a courageous step to take.
It's important that you find the right therapist/counsellor for you. I know from my own experience as a client that the quality of the relationship I have with my therapist is what enables me to do the work I need to do.
You need to be able to trust your therapist/counsellor and to feel safe enough to share things that you may never have talked about before. The first session will tell us whether or not I'm the right person for you.
I'm a Gestalt Body Process Therapist. This means that I pay attention to what you're doing as well as to what you're saying. The process is active, using creative methods designed to increase sensitivity and awareness of your own experience.
This process helps us both to understand what's causing you difficulty and what we can do to address it.
Further information about what therapy/counselling is all about (and Gestalt in particular) can be found by visiting the blog page of my website - www.estherwalker.co.uk
I have a small private counselling practice. The rest of the time I work as a learning & development specialist using drama and story-based methods. For more information about that side of my work please look at www.foruminteractive.co.uk.
Training, Qualifications & Experience
I have a Foundation in Gestalt Psychotherapy (1 year) and a Diploma in Gestalt Therapy (3 years). This 4 year training combined theory, experiential learning, supervised practice and personal therapy.
I've also completed an International Postgraduate Training (2 years) in 'body work' (i.e. how to create connections between our mind, the language we use and our physical experience).
Further back, I trained as a sociologist and have a doctorate in Communication Studies.
I've been working as a therapist for 5 years. I am an Associate Member of UKAHPP working towards accreditation, and I operate with their code of ethics.
