Profile

I believe that counselling/psychotherapy can be a transformative process that can open people up to deeper parts of themselves. Entering counselling/therapy is a courageous act. I have great appreciation for the strength my clients bring to the process. I work with individuals with the aim of resolving issues and enabling life enhancement.

Counselling/psychotherapy is an important step forward, so take your time and read about as many counsellors and psychotherapists as you wish before deciding upon one that best suits your individual needs. If you decide following reading more about me that you may like for us to work together we can arrange an initial consultation which gives you the opportunity to see if you are comfortable and feel you can connect with me as your counsellor/psychotherapist.

My name is Sarah Victor and I am a Psychotherapist and Counsellor working in Sutton Coldfield near Birmingham in the West Midlands.

I work with individual adults — either on an open-ended basis or for an agreed time period — with the aim of resolving issues and enabling life enhancement.

Counselling and Psychotherapy

People often seek counselling/psychotherapy when they are concerned by particular problems, when they are distressed, or when they are experiencing a general sense of unease and lack of fulfilment in their lives. Counselling/psychotherapy can be effective in the treatment of the following issues:

  • Low self-esteem
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Panic attacks
  • Phobias
  • Bereavement loss
  • Stress
  • Relationship problems
  • Childhood problems
  • Abuse
  • Issues of isolation or loneliness
  • Work dissatisfaction
  • Addictions of various kinds
  • Eating disorders
  • A sense that life could be of a better quality
  • A loss of a sense of direction and purpose

It does not involve giving advice or directing a client to take a particular course of action. The outcome of the work between a client and their counsellor/therapist will be dependent on a variety of dynamics — the effectiveness of the counsellor/therapist, the limitations of the approach, the commitment and effort from the client and the complexity of the issues brought. Counselling/psychotherapy does not offer a ‘magic wand’ and entering into it requires serious consideration. An initial consultation with your therapist gives you the opportunity to agree whether this is the suitable way forward for you.

In the sessions the client can explore various aspects of their life and feelings, talking about them freely and openly in a way that is rarely possible with friends or family. Bottled-up feelings such as anger, anxiety, grief and embarrassment can become very intense and counselling offers an opportunity to explore them, with the possibility of making them easier to understand. The therapist will encourage the expression of feelings and as a result of their training will be able to accept and reflect the client’s problems without becoming burdened by them.

I have worked with adults in the voluntary sector and in private practice. I have had experience of both long- and short-term work with a wide range of issues, both with my private clients and those with whom I have worked at a leading charity in the West Midlands.

In working with my clients, my aim is to meet them with empathy and respect and without judgement, valuing their uniqueness and individuality, whilst tailoring the therapy to their specific needs.
