About me

Thanks for looking over  my profile

I have over 25 years of experience working with adults and young people who are experiencing, anxiety, depression along with other emotional and psychological distress. Counselling can be a liberating and uplifting experience, making the first step to call a counsellor is the biggest step you can make. I also see couples who are experiencing relationship issues and difficulties or just need to talk through issues together, in a professional, safe place.

I qualified as a Person Centred Counsellor and Cognitive (CBT) Therapist  (University of Newcastle Upon Tyne)

I am also a qualified workplace and interpersonal mediator (couples) I can offer mediation meetings/sessions to clients throughout the Northern region

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

WHAT HAPPENS IN COUNSELLING

Counselling is a very special relationship where the focus remains on you and what is happening in your life. Counselling is different from other helping professions in that I do not, as a rule, give you advice or tell you what to do. This is because my aim is to help you think about your situation in such a way to help you develop greater awareness and understanding.

With this awareness and understanding you will then decide yourself whether you wish to make any changes.

My role is to help you to think more clearly, or look at things from a different perspective, to become more aware of your own thoughts, feelings, and behaviour. I will also help you to evaluate how accurate or helpful your current thinking patterns are and assist you to consider alternative ways of perceiving how things are in your life.

I do not judge or tell you what to do

DO I NEED COUNSELLING

If you feel that these relate to you then the chances are that therapy will be helpful to you:-

You have problems harming the quality of your life and you dont know how to solve them
Your work , family and friendships are impaired by the problems you have
You are troubled by anxiety or depression
You find it difficult to talk to people you know, or you find it difficult to reach out to people, to develop meaningful relationships
You repeatedly behave in ways you regret
You are willing to talk over your troubles in private with a supportive and confidential counsellor, even though you may feel unsure or anxious about the thought of doing so

HOW LONG WILL I HAVE TO COME FOR

This depends on what your needs are. Some people find that after only a very few sessions they have some clarity and focus and are ready to end the counselling.

Other people value the ongoing support and relationship counselling gives them  and will continue to want sessions for weeks, months or even years. There is no one size fits all when it comes to counselling.

The frequency and duration of your contact with me is something that we will keep under review as we work together. I will never tell you that you have to keep coming for sessions, you are always free to leave the sessions when you feel ready.

At the same time, it is helpful for us to agree mutually, in advance, when the counselling will end , so that we have time to bring things to a close.

HOW CONFIDENTIAL IS COUNSELLING

In order for counselling to be effective, it has to be confidential. This is something that I take very seriously. This level of confidentiality is one of the main ways in which counselling/coaching differs from other forms of helping, for example talking to friends or family can rarely offer the same degree of confidentiality as talking to a counsellor.

Because of this confidentiality, you will find that, as you get used to coming for counselling, you are freer to talk about whatever you wish to. Many people find that this greater freedom helps them to explore areas of their lives that they may never have had a chance to talk about. In common with most other counsellors there are some situations where I may not be able to keep total confidentiality.

This will be in particular, if someone tells me that they are thinking of harming themselves in a way that I believe puts them at serious risk, or if someone tells me that they are doing something that puts others at risk, I may not be able to keep such information confidential.

However breaking confidentiality is rare, and only happens after talking this through first with to the person concerned. The information, to safeguard you/others which needs to be shared with a third party, will be kept to the basic minimum.

If you feel you need to talk, in a safe space which will allow you time to explore your options in a non judgemental, congruent, environment then give me a call.
