About me

Are you at a crisis in your life? Is a relationship causing you unhappiness? Or do you just need to talk about something that bothers you to someone who doesn't have an agenda? Then counselling can give you a time and space to see clearly rather than going round in ever more frustrating circles.

Some people feel that they shouldn’t go to counselling because their situation isn’t bad enough. They feel it's indulgent to talk about oneself when other people’s problems are so much worse. Or they can feel if they begin to try and talk about how depressed and unhappy they are things will get worse. What happens if they never stop crying? These are common fears. You may be moved to come due to a relationship breakdown, an affair that has been discovered, a bereavement, a loss of confidence, or a sense that something is amiss - you may not even know what that might be. No matter what is disturbing you right now counselling can be a safe space to share your fears and anxieties without fear of judgement. Being brave enough to book a session is the first step out of the old patterns that keep you stuck.

I have worked as a Person-Centred counsellor in North London for over twenty-five years. My aim is to provide a space so my clients can feel respected and valued while they examine what it is that stops them leading the lives they want. I see counselling as a collaborative and creative process. I aim to promote a sense of equality and trust in the therapeutic relationship, whether we agree to a long or short-term contract. I work with individuals and also with couples.

Working with couples in distress I look to find a way to understand what blocks are standing in the way of real intimacy and honest communication. This may involve looking at past relating issues, and old family systems that have affected their present relationship. It isn't individual therapy x2 but rather taking a look at the 'relationship' as the 'client' and ensuring that no one in the partnership is made to feel to be the 'problem'.

I don't feel I work with 'issues' at all, but with people who find themselves in difficult situations and need time and space to understand what is going on for them.

Availability

I work most weekdays and evenings.

There is no obligation after a first session to continue. It is a chance for you to see if counselling is what you want and if I am the person you feel comfortable enough to work with.

Member organisations

Registered / Accredited

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

Other areas of counselling I deal with

Some of the problems that people come with, have more to do with family patterns and hidden messages that were passed through the generations than the here and now. If it seems appropriate to the issue you are having, we may look at these histories and work with them.

Fees

£75.00 - £120.00

Additional information

Finding the right person is the most important first step and I would encourage clients to take the time to try to see several counsellors before making a decision. For this reason, I charge a lower cost for our first meeting to allow the possibility of investing in making the right decision.

After the initial session, which I offer at a lower cost, when you can see if counselling is what you want and ask any questions, we can work out between us how we want to work together. I offer regular or flexible times each week, depending on what suits us both. Please feel free to contact me to ask any questions you may have without obligation.

Individuals
£75 for daytime session (before 5 pm)
£85 for an evening session.

Couples
£120 for an hour long session

Some low-cost places may be available so please ask if these are available.

I have worked in a number of creative fields before training and working as a counsellor.

Testimonials

"I'm not sure how often in life you can actually look back and know how fundamentally changed you are as a person, but I know that the last year has been that year for me. Our sessions have been a big part of that." P.L.

"I know the work has been achieved through our counselling sessions, but I would like to share with you, how I feel you have enhanced my essence of life. My eyes and heart have re-opened to living and enjoying life, whilst also making my peace with the not so great days that I may experience along the way. You, and the job you do, your experience and your warmth, (plus your lovely warm room and the complimentary water) have been the right thing for me, the best, kindest thing I've ever done for me." D.C.

"Just wanted to say thank you for all your guidance in helping on my journey. Having the time to speak with you has had a huge impact on my life and I'm really pleased I stuck with it." R.C.
