I provide a safe, non-judgemental and welcoming environment in which to explore the issues that are troubling you. As an experienced practitioner, I have worked with a wide range of issues that include addiction, stress, anxiety, depression, loss of meaning, loss, bereavement, eating disorders, abuse, childhood sexual abuse, relationship issues, sexual issues, bullying, low self-esteem, low self-confidence and work related issues.
I offer counselling and psychotherapy on a one to one basis.
My practice is in Kemptown, Brighton and is easily accessible by buses numbers 12, 12A, 14, 27 which stop directly outside my address. There is also pay by meter parking for cars very close by.
How I work
My role as an existential therapist is to work with you towards acquiring a better understanding of yourself as well as working towards the fulfillment of any goals borne out of that understanding.
Treating each person as an individual and preserving their autonomy is central to the way I work. I will listen very carefully to your story and what it means to you as an individual and not impose a set of categories often used to treat such conditions as, for example, depression, anxiety, anger, low self esteem etc. I will work with you as an individual towards exploring your feelings, beliefs and values so that you may understand what really matters to you. I will also work with you to explore how you relate to other people, for example, your partner, family, friends and people at work and how your relations with them may be improved. Your values and beliefs may differ from theirs so that we could then explore how best to live with those differences.
Once you have had the opportunity to think about and identify what it is that matters most to you and which stance towards your life makes it meaningful to you, you will be able to live a better life.
I work with clients on a short-term (12 sessions) as well as long-term (1 year+) basis.
Existential Counselling and Psychotherapy
Existential counselling and psychotherapy is informed by a branch of philosophy known as existentialism, which examines the meaning of existence and the human condition. It can be traced back to the work of philosophers, most notably Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, Heidegger and Sartre. Well-known existential psychotherapists and academics include Viktor Frankl, Rollo May, James Bugental and Irvin Yalom in the States, and Emmy Van Deurzen and Ernesto Spinelli in the UK.
Existential psychotherapy is based on the understanding that each person is responsible and therefore free to create their own life and has the freedom to choose how to respond to situations in life, whilst also taking into account that there are certain life givens that we have to live with, for example, that of having a mental or physical condition, and, of course, that of being born and therefore “thrown” into a world with certain people and a given culture and that as finite beings one day we will die.
