Are you seeking a safe, confidential space to talk through and make sense of difficulties in your life with someone who will not judge you?
I specialise in individual work with adults and young people, and also in work with couples experiencing difficulties in their relationships. I offer:
short-term, solution focused counselling for specific issues;
longer-term counselling for more complex concerns and
personal exploration. I also offer clinical supervision & consultancy.
I have a Masters Degree in Contemporary Therapeutic Counselling from the University of Hertfordshire, and a Postgraduate Diploma in CYP-IAPT Therapy (CBT) from University College London. I have undertaken training in Solution-Focused Brief Therapy and Mentalizing Based Therapy (NHS), and couples counselling at the Centre for Counselling & Psychotherapy Education, London. I also offer EMDR, an evidence-based therapy for anxiety, depression, phobias, pain management etc. A trained bereavement counsellor, I have worked voluntarily for a number of organisations including Cruse Bereavement Care, Samaritans and Crisis. My counselling experience has included working within both primary and secondary schools, and the criminal justice system. Previously, I had a long career in the public sector as a manager, focusing on safeguarding children, young people and vulnerable adults, and trained as a work place mediator. I currently work as a counsellor/psychotherapist within the NHS and in private practice.
As an experienced psychodynamic counsellor, I am trained to listen in a way that enables you to find your own voice, and change how you feel about yourself and the world around you.
An individuals current difficulties and feelings of distress may be linked to experiences from their past whilst they are unaware of the connection. For example, people can often repeat patterns of behaviour in relationships whilst feeling unable to change. Sometimes people can re-enact past experiences and feelings without being aware that they are doing so. This can occur even within the therapeutic relationship they develop with their counsellor. As your counsellor, I will neither judge nor reject you, but will help you to uncover these links with the past and to develop a better understanding of yourself and your life experiences. Negotiating a new relationship with your past can help you to live creatively in the present and find effective ways of dealing with life's challenges.
In my work with couples I take a positive view of relationships even though it can be hard to see them as anything other than negative when we are having relationship difficulties.
Couple counselling provides an opportunity for a couple to explore their problems in a supportive and safe atmosphere that facilitates improved communication, mutual understanding and the development of their relationship.
I work in way which considers the needs and concerns of each individual regardless of: social class; age; gender; race; ethnic group; religion; sexual orientation; disability.
I am an Accredited Member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and a UK Council for Psychotherapy Registered Psychotherapist and I abide by their Code of Ethics and Practice. My work is supervised according to BACP guidelines, and I am committed to on-going continuing personal development and training.
