About me

Hello, I'm Julia, I'm a professionally qualified accredited counsellor. I have been a counsellor for over 20 years. I draw from CBT, humanistic approaches and solution focused therapy, and I am Accredited with the BACP.

I see people facing all sorts of problems, as well as those whose goal is to explore their lives further. I offer you respect, a warm understanding and sensitive encouragement to explore problems and to develop new ways of coping.

Working together - what to expect.

Our first session would be an opportunity to look at what issues are concerning you and to see how we can work together. I'm told I'm very warm and friendly so hopefully I can help ease any feelings of stress you may feel coming to your first session.  If you then decide you would like to continue, we can arrange to meet again.

The number of sessions you have will be up to you to choose, you may just want one or two sessions which is just fine. Many people find that they make positive changes in their lives after just 6 meetings, but others find it helpful to continue for longer, staying with me for 10 or 20 sessions or many more. Some people find it helpful to continue with sessions for the long-term,  the choice will always be entirely down to your preferences.

I will be offering in person counselling at my practice, online counselling and a small number of home visits locally. I usually work at a private counselling and therapy practice situated on Whitchurch Road in Cardiff. It is a warm, friendly and modern space with a number of counsellors and therapists working from the practice. I have also just started working at The Mind Body Clinic on Newport Road.

If you have any questions at all, please do get in touch.

Training, qualifications & experience

You can be confident in my abilities as a counsellor. I have been a counsellor  over 20 years and I am one of the few counsellors who have attained accredited status with the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy.

The BACP is one of the main governing bodies of counselling and psychotherapy in Britain. Being accredited means that I have achieved a substantial level of training and experience that meets an advanced standard set by BACP.

As well as working privately since 2011, I have recently worked as a counsellor and supervisor for a charity for families from 2017 to Dec 21 where I saw individuals and couples. Previously, I worked for over 13 years as a counsellor in Cardiff University with staff, students, members of the public and supervising other counsellors.

I have also worked as a counsellor in a GP surgery. In addition, I have over 20 years research experience at Cardiff University, University of South Wales and in the NHS, which has included research on depression, self esteem, families, visual impairments, end of life care, dementia and the well-being of carers and parents of children with developmental delays.

Qualifications:

  • Accredited British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (2009)
  • Diploma in Humanistic Counselling (CSCT 2001).
  • BSc (Hons.) Psychology (Cardiff University, 1990)
  • M.Phil (Cardiff University 1997).

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
