Training, Qualifications & Experience

James Harris - MBACP (Dip)
About me
I am a qualified counsellor/therapist holding a CPCAB (counselling and psychotherapy central awarding body) Counselling Diploma Qualification. I am a member of the BACP British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists. I also hold a Certificate in Counselling Skills – CPACB (Counselling & Psychotherapy Central Awarding Body)
Basic Counselling Skills – CPCAB (Counselling & Psychotherapy Central Awarding Body Plus a Certificate in Counselling Studies – CPCAB (Counselling & Psychotherapy Central Awarding Body

My experience of counselling has been gained through working for the NHS During this time I have developed skills arising out of a range of issues Seeing patients on a one to one basis in various GP practices. During this time I have come to realise that everybody is different. No two people think the same. What suits one doesn't suit another and this is why I prefer an integrative approach which allows me to draw from a range of therapeutic styles My Practice
I practice in an integrative way using a range of therapeutic approaches This means that I am not restricted to one particular type of therapy, for example therapy can be broken down into four parts

Person Centred - this tends to work in the "here and now" Ie what is going on in your life right now
Psychodynamic - this generally deals with the past it could be the recent past or child hood events
CBT (Cognitive Behaviour Therapy) - Cognitive, as the name suggests is about the mind, so generally looks at a person's thinking processes
SFT (Solution focus therapy) Solution therapy works in the here and now and seeks to find a solution to a particular problems or a situation and looks to make a breakthrough from what may appear unsolvable
These four approaches can be used singularly or they can all be combined in an integrative approach.

Helena Madden - MBACP (Dip)
About me
As a fully qualified counsellor I work in an integrative way, so I can draw upon various insights of different counselling therapies to aid in the counselling process. This enables me to offer the therapy that is suited to my clients I offer a counselling service within ‘Calm' on a part-time basis, appointments can be made for evenings or weekends, making it easier for those who have different working shift patterns to have access to the services that ‘Calm' offers

I am committed to providing therapy in a safe, confidential and non-judgemental environment. My work is with individuals and my aim is to be part of the therapeutic process to enable me to help my clients to help themselves

My experience of counselling has been gained primarily through my volunteer work I have gained experience with those who have suffered depression, anxiety, bereavement, grief, trauma, post-traumatic stress, low self-esteem, relationship difficulties, domestic violence, abuse and work-related stress
Before becoming a counsellor, I worked in a Human Resources department, for just over 10 years, this was within a large private sector organisation, providing various forms of support ranging from, managerial business issues to general employee workplace support This experience has given me a good understanding of the challenges and pressures associated within the workplace and also the pressures for people trying to strike a work/life balance

I am a member of the BACP and I abide by its Code of Ethics, as a part of this, I am in supervision, to ensure that I am working ethically and safely

I do understand that sometimes it's very difficult to take that ‘first step', to seek support from a therapist Often within our everyday lives, we might feel we are going through bad times or experiencing some form of difficulties It's not always possible, for one reason or another, for us to get support from family or friends A therapist is there to listen in a non-judgemental way, attempting to understand and to provide that safe place for you to explore your feelings and thoughts, it's your time, it's about you

    Further Information

    The Counselling Relationship
Within counselling it is hoped that at some stage a connection is made between you and your counsellor. This doesn't mean that you become the best of friends but it does mean that you can work together in such a way that a trusting relationship and therapeutic alliance develops.

Within this therapeutic alliance, often old buried emotions and hurts can be brought to the surface and dealt with safely. Or sometimes a new clarity can be given to current situations.

Calms office is located in Derby on Burton Road and within walking distance of Derby City centre. There is ample parking outside.
