Profile
My approach to counselling and psychotherapy is from a psychodynamic perspective, trying to make sense of the present in terms of the past. I work with individuals and couples of all ages to try to work through issues which are causing problems and distress. These may relate to immediate life crises or long-term persistent difficulties.
I contract with the client for time-limited or longer-term, open ended work according to need.
Training, Qualifications & Experience
My original training was an an occupational therapist and I worked for many years in mental health in the NHS, using both cognitive and psychodynamic approaches to emotional problems. In 1986 I joined the Isis Centre in Oxford, a self-referral counselling service provided by the NHS, as an Associate Counsellor where I continued my counselling training for 4 years. From 1988-90 I also studied psychotherapy at the Warneford Hospital Psychotherapy Department, a 2 year clinical course validated by the Continuing Education Department of Oxford University (CertPsychOUDCE). I began to develop a private practice in counselling and psychotherapy which continued alongside working as counsellor and psychotherapist in the NHS until 2000. Since then I have worked in full-time private practice, offering counselling and psychotherapy to clients and supervision to practitioners in counselling and mental health. Since 2000 I have taught on the Psychodynamic Studies Programme run by Oxford University's Continuing Education Department.
I am Senior Accredited Counsellor and Supervisor with BACP and UKRCP registered.
