Profile
THE WAY I WORK.
I work using the psycohdynamic model, which means that I consider the inter-relationship between people and how past relationships, events, experiences and patterns of behaviour may impact on current conflicts. In working through difficulties psychodynamically, it is possible to bring about significant change. By engaging in this process, insight and understanding often leads to change and growth.
ABOUT ME.
My interest in the emotional well being of people began as an art student. I spent time enabling patients with mental health problems express themselves visually. The power of visual unconscious communication was formative in my understanding and interest in peoples internal lives.
I went on to teach art/ceramics and design for many years. Working with clay is an instant and spontaneous way of accessing the deeper layers of unconscious thought. Art allows people to express themselves and discover previously undiscovered aspects of them.
I was fortunate to discover therapy myself in my early forties when a series of personal difficulties felt overwhelming. Therapy helped me through as I grew to understand my self more clearly and come to terms with those problems.
TRAINING
It was during this time I began my training with Cruse Bereavement Care and work as a volunteer Counsellor for ten years. I then undertook additional specialist training to work with bereaved young people. Following this, myself and a colleague launched a Cruse young people’s service locally.
Cruse provided the platform to extend my training. I gained a BACP Advanced and Post Graduate Diploma in counselling. Alongside this I undertook four years of personal therapy, followed by my accreditation.
My training with Cruse remains pivotal to the way I’ve continued to work with clients. Dealing with loss and change is integral to most issues. Counselling helps people to lead more satisfying and fulfilling lives and working collaboratively is both rewarding and enriching for me too.
CLINICAL EXPERIENCE
My clinical expertise derives from working in GP surgeries, training and teaching institutions, statutory and voluntary agencies and working with the young adults and the elderly mentally ill. I work with other health professional in order to integrate mental health services and make them more accessible to patients with out the stigma attached to psychiatric referral.
