About me

About me

Life is difficult at times. In such moments it can help so talk to another and find creative solutions on how to move forward. I aim to provide you a safe and nurturing environment in which we can explore issues that trouble you.

Therapy provides a safe space to explore issues and challenges that you face in life. These issues may range from internal struggles with self-confidence, anxiety, depression and anger management to relational issues with conflict and abuse. Alternatively one may seek to explore deeper existential issues around meaning, purpose and how to live a purposeful life. Through a series of non–judgemental empathetic meetings I seek to develop inner strength and tap into your potential to seek outcomes and solutions that serve you best.

Short Term Solutions Focused Therapy

Short term work focuses on specific issue that you bring. Often clarifying the issue at hand in itself can bring relief. Following on from this the questions that presents is what would be a "good" outcome for you. Holding this outcome as a reference and context for our work I then explore how you can find ways to support yourself and move forward.

Through my experience and further training I have the following areas of focus:

Depression and Anxiety

Having worked with a number of clients around depression, generalised anxiety and panic attacks I focus on the following key aspects.

Mindfulness: Using a variety of exercises I would look at how you can manage your feelings and negative thought patterns that lead you to feel either depressed and, or anxious. The intention would be to allow help you develop ways self manage these difficult and overwhelming feelings.

Context: I would also look at what situations trigger feelings of anxiety and depression as Ill as any historical context and traumatic events that may have a role to play. Holding a greater awareness around life experiences would potentially allow for more clarity allowing you to choose supportive behavioural patterns as opposed to default patterns.

Please note that causes of depression and anxiety can be deep rooted and these sessions can offer you the first steps of dealing with these powerful issues.

Family, Relationships and Entanglements

Families, a source of great support and strength or alternatively a source a great anxiety and difficulty. Entangled and challenging relationships can have a huge impact on us and pull us back into difficult or even destructive patterns.

Our attempt would be to uncover what lies hidden behind these entanglements. Lets be clear, it is not about making happy families. Facing reality and the situation you find yourself in is the first step. Our work would seek to take a step back and get a holistic picture of what impacts your family. Often migration and trauma experienced by previous generations can resonate through the system and still have an impact today. Recognising what belongs to previous generations and what is not for you to carry forward in your generation is significant.

Our endeavour would be to see how you can come to terms with the situation and allow yourself to move forward and flourish in your life.

Bereavement and Loss

Bereavement, grief and loss are difficult, particularly in our society where it is not talked about and met with silence.

Death and dying throw up difficult emotions, not just sadness and grief but more challenging one's like guilt, anger and relief. Relationships come under pressure as people react differently and family dynamics are altered as people seek to adjust to the change. It often has an impact on our health with symptoms ranging from loss of appetite to lack of energy. Changed circumstances may demand I undertake new and unfamiliar tasks requiring us to learn new skills. I may question our faith, how can God allow something like this to happen and I may question who I are and what our purpose in life is. All this can be deeply confusing, unsettling and difficult to manage.

Add to this societal taboo around speaking of death and the constant request to move on and get over it can leave us feeling pressured, very alone and isolated.

Our work would give you an opportunity to explore and process your bereavement, be it recent or older. Exploring your relationship to the deceased and I would seek to explore how you can find some peace and come terms with their death. Death is final and asking you to get over it or move on is deeply disrespectful. Our hope is that counselling allows you manage the grieving process and find some peace.

Being Gay and Coming Out for People of the Black and Asian Communities

What does it mean to be gay and from a minority community? Does one have to come out? What are the consequences? How can I be happy and be true to our heritage? These are some of the challenges facing LGBTQI clients from the BME communities.

I explore what it means for you to be gay and how this can be reconciled with your background and the community you come from. I explore challenging feelings, possibly of shame, guilt and disloyalty towards your heritage as Ill as the undermining thoughts that you are not a good person and inferior or defective in some way.

The big question, should you come out? Or reflecting on your current circumstances would it be more appropriate for you to hold the tension and maintain silence? What the consequences are for you of either choice? I can not give you the answer but by exploring the issue I hope you may gain some more clarity on what is best way forward for you.

Questions of sex, disease including HIV and AIDs may arise and how you can remain safe. Looking at chem sex and what the scene is all about and if you wish to be part of it. What social support networks are available to you and how can you meet like minded people that are supportive and appreciative of you and your sexuality?

Longer Term Therapy

Longer term therapy may be required when deeper issues and trauma need to be worked through. Integrating wounded parts of ourselves can take time and this is where long term therapy can be deeply supportive.
