THE CAPACITY TO GROW. I have been a practicing psychotherapist and counsellor for 30 years. Central to my work is my belief that we are not problems to be solved but lives to be lived. Our lives are to be approaced from the widest number of perspectives as we strive to understand ourselves. I believe in our capacity to grow and thrive in harmony with ourselves and those we share life with. I support exploration of the ways we have of relating and how at times we can become stuck and act against our own deepest wishes or impede our deepest longings. It is in meeting one another that we can come to know ourselves and experience deeper connection within ourselves and live the full life we imagine we are capable of.
INDIVIDUAL WORK. I offer skilled support to people who face challenges and changes in this busy and turbulent world of ours. Therapy can be for short or longer periods of time. There is no rule about the length of time; it depends on what you want and need. It may be that you have recently become bereaved, or divorced or have another kind of crisis that you simply need space to talk over in confidence in which case the length of time in therapy may be short. Or it may be you want to address more deep seated unhappiness, difficulties and patterns of behaviour or have distressing bouts of depression or a sense of pointlessness or despair. Finding and building the inner resources to overcome such things can take a considerable period and commitment of resources but not necessarily; we are all unique after all. But what ever the length of time my philosphy and practice is to support you in identyfying and developing the means within yourself what matters to you in your life.
COUPLE THERAPY. I offer therapy for couples experiencing difficulties in their relationships. Again this may be for short or longer periods of time depending on circumstances and need. Having established through an initial 2-3 meetings together, what it is that is going wrong and the desire to find away throgh to something more, then the ground is clearer for further exploration in which the focus is on learning to to recalibrate responses and refresh the relationship in ever deeper connections with each other. Such an approach offers each partner a new window into the other.
DIALOGUE. My practice whether with individuals or couples is dialogic and relational. Human beings are fundamentally social and relational creatures and psychotherapy aims to support our search for satisfying and sustaining relationships. Therapy is a collaborative venture where you are free to discuss whatever is important to you and you can be sure of my interest and engagement. Understanding and coming to terms with your underlying difficulties rests in learning that there is a place where we can become aware and alive to ourselves, the past's influence, our dreams and hopes for the future in relationship to the life we have now.
My practice is informed by principles of respect, confidentiality and compassion.
My theoretical roots lie in Gestalt and Psychodynamic therapies and more recently Emotionally Focussed Therapy (EFT) Gestalt tends to emphasise the present experience and psychodynamic therapy is concerned with our relationships with ourselves and others and how we live these out. EFT is a strong emerging form of therapy growing from our increased understanding of the need we have to learn to relate to each using our feelings more explicitly. I am very happy to talk about the modalities I work from.
A particular interest in my work is support for people struggling with depression, creativity blocks, life stage crises, and problems of identity and loss of meaning.
