About me

NB: I am not taking supervisees at the moment.

If you're concerned about starting this process, especially if it will be via phone or video and not in-person, rest assured that my sessions are arranged to make the whole thing as easy and painless for you as possible.

My first session is free-of-charge, so you can find out how it works for you without any commitment or obligation.

People have lots of different fears about seeing a counsellor for the first time, or you may even have had an experience of therapy in the past which didn't go very well.  I can't speak for other counsellors, but here are a few things about me and the way I work which might put your mind more at ease:

  • I am a Senior Accredited Counsellor, which means I have been scrutinised by a professional society and proved to their satisfaction that I have a higher level of qualification and a greater degree of experience.
  • The therapies I list are only those in which I have training as a specific formal qualification.
  • The areas I work with, which are listed below, are only those in which I have a qualification or have undertaken professional developmental study.  If an issue is outside of my training and experience, I will say so.
  • I am not a mind-reader, I can't tell what you're thinking or "read you like a book".  If you are anxious that counselling may open wounds or bring up long-buried feelings then we can talk about this worry.  This is therapy, not a confessional; you don't have to dredge things up that you don't want to.
  • It is not my job and I am not qualified to diagnose you as being "schizophrenic", "depressed", "mad" or anything else like that.  If you have a formal diagnosis then that's fine, but that's not what I do.
  • Our sessions are confidential, including working with thoughts of suicide or self-harm.  The exceptions to confidentiality are circumstances of serious law-breaking which anyone would be legally obliged to report (e.g. planning an act of terrorism).  I will explain what these are at the start so you know exactly where you stand.
  • We will work in collaboration and discussion with one-another; I am not an expert about your life because I haven't lived it like you have.  I will do a lot of listening.  I'm not here to lecture or tell you how to run your life.  I won't advise you, boss you about or try to make you do (or not do) things.
  • I work to ethical and professional rules which are designed to ensure that you are helped and not harmed by the counselling.
  • If you have had a poor experience in the past then I am very sorry to hear it.  It does happen, but all counsellors are different and you are in charge; if you are unhappy with the counsellor you are seeing now then you are at liberty to change to another counsellor.

I particularly specialise in anger management counselling.

Click here to read the feature in The Worcester News on the success story of just one client of mine who beat his raging impulses through our work together, and who continues to enjoy life without angriness.

Type of counsellor I am (my preferred approach)

I treat all my clients starting from the premise that you have your own unique experiences and world-view.  I may suggest other approaches or techniques if - and only if - I think that they could be helpful to you specifically.  It is always up to you whether to try something or work in a certain way, or not.

Counselling is not "one size fits all", and although some practitioners choose to follow a set pattern of exercises and techniques with each client, I believe in matching and tailoring the work to the individual person, their situation and personality.

Visit my website for a lot more information about counselling, my way of working, and tips for selecting your counsellor.

Training, qualifications & experience

My professional qualifications:

After three years of training, I gained my Advanced Diploma in Counselling, which was founded in Humanistic, Person-centred therapy and also included training in Transactional Analysis.

Having qualified as a counsellor, I then completed a further 2-year training programme to achieve my Higher Diploma in Counselling which is founded in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.

I have now achieved my Level 6 Diploma in Psychotherapy (a BA equivalent), which was one year of training and research.

I also regularly attend workshops in various subjects to keep up-to-date with new ideas.

My professional memberships:

I am a Senior Accredited Member of the National Counselling Society.  I am on their Professional Standards Authority Accredited Register.

I am an Approved Supervisor with the National Counselling Society.

I am a full registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).  I am on their Professional Standards Authority Accredited Register.

Both of these societies have a code of ethics describing acceptable standards of professional practice, and I work within both of these codes.

The Professional Standards Authority Accredited Register (AR) was set up by the government to improve standards of safety for the public.

Other:

I lecture in counselling as well as offering private training courses in communications and counselling skills.

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
